I recently tried to give this reissue one more try – (pun intended), and it still bothers me that they skipped the instrumental b-side of “Father Figure” from it’s 12″ and Maxi-Cassingle release. The single mix of “I Want Your Sex” NEVER appeared on this album (along with the broken-into-parts 12″ mix”) The slightly different edit did come from the BEVERLY HILLS COP II soundtrack of course…. The CD bonus material from the original issuing “Hard Day” (Shep Pettibone Mix) is also not included. Frustrating.

First time poster here –
Great article – I’m glad the album is getting the fair treatment it deserves (even if for the “24th Anniversary”????). Still there are some things that just don’t sit right with the packaging. “Fantasty” really first appeared (USA reference here) as the b-side/bonus track to “Freedom ’90″ (from the LISTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE VOL.1). “Love’s In Need Of Love Today” (live) was recorded for one of the first UK AIDS charity concerts (that one also included a WHAM! Reunion. “I Believe (When I Fall In Love)” would have been ripe for GM’s Cover To Cover tour – but so little is mentioned about the recording date/players on that one – ever since it showed up on the “Don’t Let The Sun….” (along with the fantastic Gladys Knight cover “If You Were My Woman” from the NELSON MANDELA UK concert) YEARS later. I would have much rather enjoyed some of these live events showcased, or even footage/live recordings from The Faith Tour. Also, what about the duet with Jody Watley (yes, recorded in separate studios) from her self-titled album? “Learn To Say No” is a great rocker, with lots of great players and production. Would have been a lost gem of a find – and period specific.

Thought you might be interested to know that ‘I Want Your Sex’ (Part 1) is available on CD, just not on a George Michael album. It appears on the CD of ‘The Hits Album 6′ (cat no. CD HITS 6) a UK hits compilation from 1987 – this was a CBS/WEA/BMG compilation designed to compete with the ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ compilation albums which were doing well for EMI and some other record companies. ‘I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)’ is also on the same comp.

I too mourn the lack of “I Want Your Sex (Part 1)” on CD. I’ve remedied this, with both versions of the CD I’ve owned, by using Audacity to split the two up. My iPod is all the happier for it.

And Mike, tomorrow morning I’m probably going to upload some waveforms of select moments from the album compared to my original CD. I’m nowhere near authoritative when it comes to mastering and sound quality, either in terms of technical acuity or my own fool ears, but for albums I’ve owned more than once, it’s probably to everyone’s credit that I try to A/B them a bit.

What I really wish they’d put on CD… and maybe it’s out there somewhere and I’m just not aware of it… is the single version of “I Want Your Sex.” Just Part I, by itself… not segueing into Part II (as on the “Faith” album) nor Part II by itself (as on “Ladies & Gentlemen…”) but Part I, stand-alone, as issued here in the US. Heck, I used to have the single back when the album first came out. I suspect I got rid of the single when I bought the LP.

Just a note for those who buy the standard 2-CD set (with no DVD), there are no liner notes, except for a brief write-up about the hit singles from Faith. Unfortunately, my local HMV didn’t have the 2-CD/DVD set, but did have the box set… for $245 Canadian!!

Great article Mike. But I’m still a little curious on how the mastering turned out. I know you said it was “tasteful” and “no reason to turn the volume up anymore”. Does that mean it has a higher volume but is not brickwalled? Hopefully it has a crisp sound that pops out, rather than sounding flat. Thanks.
