The mastering of these releases leave a lot to be desired, to my ears. The music has been made as "loud" as possible, meaning they've compressed the dynamic range. They've also mastered it much brighter than the originals were, so there's a harshness to the vocals. As a result, the music, which had a nice smooth sound in its original release, is harder to listen to if you've got a sensitive audio system. Perhaps they've tried to make their earlier music sound a little like their later music, which is punchier to say the least.

A question of opinion, for sure. But the mastering does NOT sound like the originals.

Nice reviews of 4 great reissues! One small correction - they actually mention in the liner notes for Idlewild that the version of Apron Strings on the bonus disc is actually an alternate unreleased mix of the film version. If you compare it to the soundtrack you will hear right away that they are quite different - giving us three distinct versions of the great song.
