Hey Jason,

I have to be honest here, as always. I wasn't bothered by the audience reaction...the notes specify that the aim was to be of "authorized bootleg" quality, and I felt they succeeded on that count. The applause is loud, but no more than it would be on a bootleg recorded from the audience. (The release is sourced from "bootleg" materials from Doug Fieger's archives.) I wasn't distracted by the noise at all, and felt the performances were more than worthwhile. That said, maybe it's more distracting on a higher-end system? I was as surprised as you were by the All Music review pointing it out...but as with everything, your mileage could vary.

Hope this helps!

Bit late on all this: Kaleidoscope on CD 3 of the Harmless 40th Anniversary set 'I'm A Changed Person': Don't know that track, but loved 'We're Not Getting Any Younger' by them on TSOP, same sort of vintage. A bit silly and inconsequential perhaps (what it was to be young!) but for some reason it soared out the sound system at a club here in the UK in maybe '75 and set me off frantically trying to find out who and what it was. Think it was played that night on a Philly DJ Promo album with 'Sexy' and whatever else was due out. I tracked down a scuffed 7 inch US version (TSOP 4765 - intriguingly the same serial shown above for 'I'm A Changed Person'!) and the tune had a horrendous toppy mix. I'd love to see it reissued somewhere. Any plans, anyone?

While Donna Summer was known as The Queen Of Disco through her most popular recordings, a deeper understanding of her was gained through exploring her lesser known material. Donna was a rocker chick at heart, as evidenced by her effortless metal take on her own "Hot Stuff" on Live & More Encore. Her best album, 1980's The Wanderer, is by far one the best examples of a female artist staking her artistry and committment on vinyl. Tracks like "Running For Cover", "I Believe In Jesus". and "Looking Up" exhibit a woman's faith with very human and universally inclusive results. Along with Deborah Harry Donna set the mold for every female hitmaker to follow. There would be no Madonna, no Janet, or many of the other poseurs on the charts today. Still their standard has yet to be exceeded, and still femininity & womanhood have yet to be as significant or as eloquent on the pop charts through anyone else's muse.

"Linda’s backing vocals (“don’t know how to do that” or just wordless chanting?)"

I've always wanted to know what Linda was singing on "Smile Away" too... For a long time, I thought that, maybe, she was singing "Gonna have a doobie" which would certainly be fitting for Paul and Linda! To be honest, the song has always struck me as pot-smoking anthem. "Smile Away" having a similar sentiment to John Prine's "Illegal Smile" perhaps? Maybe, maybe not. But a great little rocker regardless.

To this day, I still don't know "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" is about, but I've loved that song since I was a little kid. "Back Seat of My Car" is my other favorite on the album... A truly underrated McCartney gem.

I haven't bought any of the McCartney reissues yet, but this is the one I'll be picking up.

This is one of the best reviews of the actual album that I've read - glad that it is getting its due. The deluxe version is tempting but I've stuck with the two disc version for now - it was the first McCartney album I bought and Back Seat of My car has always been an underrated part of his catalog.

Greatr review, thanks! The AllMusic review mentions that the crowd noise has been enhanced.

Did you find this to be the case? If so, is it very intrusive? I am tempted to get this, but if the crowd noise is too obviously faked I might find it too distracting.
