Live As One: "Above Us Only Sky" Documentary Explores Creative Process Behind Lennon's "Imagine"

July 30, 2019 By Sam Stone 3 Comments

PRE-ORDER BLU-RAY FROM AMAZON.COM

Last year, John Lennon fans were treated to an extravagant box set celebrating one of he highlights of his career, the Imagine album. To promote it, the original 1972 film Imagine was released in theaters and paired with the documentary Gimme Some Truth for a DVD/Blu-ray release. Channel 4 in the U.K. and A&E in the U.S. screened a new film called John & Yoko: Above Us Only Sky before it moved to Netflix.

As Eagle Rock Entertainment's CEO/Chairman Terry Shand says: "With exclusive access to the extensive Lennon video, audio and photo archive, including much previously unseen material as well as interviews with a wide range of people directly involved with the recording, this has been an exciting opportunity to tell this story fully for the first time."

Now, the feature-length documentary film, directed by Emmy Award winner and Oscar nominee Michael Epstein,  will now receive a stand-alone DVD/Blu-ray release, due on September 13 from Eagle Vision. The film is packed with unseen  footage.  It not only tracks the creation of the Imagine album, but explores the creative partnership between Lennon and Yoko Ono in music, art, and protest, while demonstrating the lasting relevance of their work. You'll hear from the performers who played on John's Imagine and Yoko's Fly, plus new interviews from Yoko Ono and Julian Lennon, photographer David Bailey, gallery owner John Dunbar, and others in the Lennon/Ono circle.

The DVD and BD will feature the 90-minute documentary alongside four bonus features: "How Do You Sleep? (Takes 5 & 6, Raw Studio Mix)," "Oh My Love (Raw Studio Mix)," "Oh Yoko! (Bahamas 1969)," and a conversation with Curt Claudio, the fan who famously turned up at Lennon's estate in Ascot.

Above Us Only Sky  promises to be a revealing look into a special creative partnership and a pair of landmark albums.  With unseen footage, new interviews, and unheard interviews with John Lennon, it's a must for fans.  So check out the documentary below and place those pre-orders now with the links below!

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.

Saw it on Netflix. Didn't show me anything I didn't already know. Not worth buying, especially when I have bootlegs that leave it in the dust.
