David Bowie, I Can't Give Everything Away (2002-2016) (Parlophone)

18LP: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
13CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada

After a period of nearly four years, David Bowie's series of "Eras" box sets is returning with a new, final volume.  I Can't Give Everything Away (2002-2016) concludes the career-spanning chronicle of the shape-shifting superstar.  The new 13-CD or 18-LP box picks up where 2021's Brilliant Adventure (1992-2001) left off, capturing the final years of an artist who never stopped innovating.  The set contains new pressings of:

  • Heathen (2002);
  • Reality (2003);
  • A Reality Tour (recorded 2003, released 2010);
  • The Next Day (2013);
  • The Next Day Extra (2013);
  • Blackstar (2016);
  • and the No Plan EP (2017).

Led Zeppelin Live EP

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Led Zeppelin, Live EP (Atlantic/Swan Song/Rhino)

CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Rhino.com
12" Vinyl: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Rhino.com

Sometimes good things come in small packages...Led Zeppelin's new Live EP, available on LP, CD, and digital formats, offers four live tracks in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Physical Graffiti.  The EP includes storming concert versions of the album's 'In My Time of Dying" and "Trampled Under Foot" from the band's five-concert stand at London's Earl's Court, 1975, as well as "Sick Again" and "Kashmir" from Knebworth, 1979.  The Knebworth dates were Zeppelin's first U.K. concerts since Earl's Court, and first gigs overall since concluding their 1977 North American tour.  Although these were released on the 2003 Led Zeppelin DVD, this EP (totaling about 35 minutes of music, or the length of a short album) marks the first time they've been released in an audio-only format.  All four tracks offer a potent reminder of just how powerful Zeppelin was at its peak.  The CD packaging is a simple gatefold single-pocket digipak; the disc itself is adorned with a replica Swan Song label and is housed in a protective inner sleeve.  Though this may be the one of the smallest major-label anniversary releases for such a major band, it's nonetheless a welcome addition to the catalogue.

Raspberries Play On

BUY NOW FROM THINK LIKE A KEY MUSIC

Various Artists, Play On: A Raspberries Tribute (Think Like a Key Music) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada) / Think Like a Key)

Play On: A Raspberries Tribute, from Think Like a Key Records, is no ordinary tribute.  Its roster is anchored by such all-time MVPs as Rick Springfield, John Waite, Foreigner's Lou Gramm, The Bangles' Debbi and Vicki Peterson, and Marshall Crenshaw, each paying tribute to Eric Carmen, Jim Bonfanti, Dave Smalley, Wally Bryson, Michael McBride, and Scott McCarl in his or her own inimitable style. Play On also features the illustrious likes of Cherie Currie of The Runaways, Kasim Sulton and Willie Wilcox of Utopia, '70s TV stars and teen idols The Hudson Brothers, Shoes, singer-actress Karla DeVito, The Lemon Twigs, Darian Sahanaja and Rob Bonfiglio of The Brian Wilson Band and Al Jardine's Pet Sounds Band, The Chefs (featuring Stan Lynch of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and Dan Baird of Georgia Satellites) and rising star Tori Holub, who recently performed with Sulton and Todd Rundgren on the What the World Needs Now tribute to Burt Bacharach.  Musician and author Ken Sharp (Overnight Sensation: The Story of Raspberries), who co-produced this tribute with Fernando Perdomo, contributes two songs (the beautifully swooning "If You Change Your Mind" and pulse-pounding "I'm a Rocker," both penned by Carmen).  All told, Play On boasts a whopping 37 tracks on 2 CDs, and four songs feature a special guest: none other than Jim Bonfanti.  He plays drums on "I Wanna Be with You," "Tonight," "If You Change Your Mind," and "I Don't Know What I Want."  The late Eric Carmen is heard on the count-in to "Tonight."  Wally Bryson's son Jesse recreates his dad's "Might as Well" off 1972's Fresh.  The words "labor of love" come to mind for this electric, eclectic release. Note that new Amazon orders will not dispatch until on or around October 10.  Think Like a Key Music is shipping direct orders now.  Read more here!

Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Heins Hoffman-Richter, a.k.a. Rod McKuen, Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease [Dark and Stormy Night Pressing] (Real Gone/Second Disc) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Real Gone Music)

Tired of "Monster Mash"? Through with calling "Ghostbusters"? If your Halloween playlist is begging for something different, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records have you covered with a new pressing of Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease.  One of the most unusual records of all time, this "Symphony for Tape Delay, IBM Instruction Manual, & Ohm Septet" was credited upon its original release in 1974 to "recognized raconteur, genius, composer, musicologist, conductor" Heins Hoffman-Richter, whom the original liner notes blithely informed us "died from an ear lobe tumor." Who? you might ask. It turns out that the late Hoffman-Richter was none other than best-selling poet and all-time cult music hero Rod McKuen (Listen to the Warm, "Seasons in the Sun")...but you won't find any cats named Sloopy here.  This excursion into the avant-garde realm of musique concrete has to be heard to be believed. It arrives on "dark and stormy night" vinyl (new for 2025) in a package that replicates the collectible original release.  The LP includes an insert with new liner notes from TSD's Joe Marchese. Get more details here.

A Blu-ray Audio includes the album remix (plus the newly-released "Fool If You Love Him," available as the new single from the set below) in high-resolution stereo, as well as a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original 10-track LP. The stereo mix will also be available on a separate vinyl pressing. The digibook packaging includes more than 60 unreleased photos from the period.  As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Get more details here!

Grateful Dead, Blues for Allah: 50th Anniversary Edition (Grateful Dead/Rhino)

1LP Picture Disc: Dead.net
1LP Black Vinyl: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
1LP Green Vinyl: Amazon U.S. / Amazon Canada
3CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
Blu-Ray Audio: Dead.net

Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary reissue program is truckin' on today with the reissue of the band's Blues for Allah, originally released on September 1, 1975.  A deluxe, expanded 3CD edition has arrived alongside a digital version and a 1LP remaster of the original album available in black vinyl, picture disc, and Dead.net-exclusive colored vinyl pressings.  In addition, a Blu-ray premieres surround, Dolby Atmos, stereo, and instrumental mixes by the prolific Steven Wilson. Blues for Allah remains one of the Dead's most singular listening experiences, with its hypnotic grooves, shifting moods, dexterous instrumental workouts, ghostly harmonies, and unexpected touches lurking around every corner.  From the mellow "Crazy Fingers" to the experimental title track, the album fuses jazz, country, folk, reggae, funk, and blues into a soundscape that's alternately earthy and ethereal.  The bonus concerts from San Francisco and the Philadelphia suburbs find the band channeling the album's shapeshifting moods onto the live stage to spellbinding effect.  Nicholas G. Meriwether and archivist David Lemieux add context within the 20-page booklet that's contained in the 3CD set's eight-panel digipak; the digipak is housed in an embossed O-card.  It's a fitting package to continue the Dead's ongoing anniversary series. Phil Collins has taken his Jacket to the cleaners and came back with a whole new cut.  Following a similar recent deluxe set for Both Sides, the Genesis drummer/singer's most commercially successful solo album, 1985's No Jacket Required, has been revisited for its 40th anniversary in two new formats. There's a new "Fully Tailored" 4LP set that offers a new half-speed master of the album, cut at Abbey Road Studios and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, along with three discs including all the live tracks and demos from a 2016 deluxe CD plus non-album sides and three previously unreleased live versions. Lyn Christopher, Lyn Christopher (Real Gone Music) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Real Gone Music)

Real Gone premieres the 1973 self-titled album from vocalist Lyn Christopher, originally released on ABC Records on CD and returns it to vinyl.  Blending pop and R&B sounds, Lyn Christopher was recorded at Electric Lady Studios and has had its songs sampled by various hip-hop artists over the years.  What makes this record stand out most, however, is its personnel: it features the first work on record - uncredited - by future KISS members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, who sang background vocals on "Celebrate II" and "Weddin'."  Also uncredited, the engineer of the album was Hendrix associate Eddie Kramer, who went on to helm the KISS demos that got the band signed to Casablanca Records.  (Rumor has it, too, that KISS' Peter Criss added handclaps to the album!)  Real Gone's edition arrives on CD and light blue vinyl.

Vincent Price Witchcraft Magic

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Vincent Price, Witchcraft-Magic: An Adventure in Demonology (Real Gone Music) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Real Gone Music)

Following its reissue on vinyl last year, Real Gone brings this title from one of the masters of horror, Vincent Price, to CD.  If you haven't seen one of his over 100 films or heard his voice in numerous voice-over appearances or animated roles, you probably at least know him as the narrator of Michael Jackson's "Thriller."  But that was not Price's only appearance on an album...far from it.  He made several himself.  Real Gone is reissuing Witchcraft-Magic: An Adventure in Demonology, from 1969.  The Capitol album is a graphic and occasionally grisly history lesson in witchcraft from the Bible through the Middle Ages, the Spanish Inquisition, and Nazi Germany. Then, accompanied by occasional eerie, abstract electronic music, Price's sinister satisfaction only mounts as he provides instruction in the dark arts, with such tracks as "How to Make a Pact with the Devil" and "Curses, Spells, Charms."  Real Gone's new release marks the first reissue of the album in over 50 years (other than a digital release in 2010).  Real Gone has replicated the original gatefold of the original 2-LP set and has reprinted the 8-page booklet in its CD premiere.  Witchcraft-Magic is also still available on vinyl.

John Cassavetes' Opening Night: Original West End Live Cast Recording (Center Stage) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Center Stage Records)

Last year, Rufus Wainwright made his West End debut as the composer, lyricist, and orchestrator of John Cassavetes' Opening Night, a new musical based on the writer-director's 1977 film. A devastating portrait of an actress in turmoil, Opening Night starred Sheridan Smith (Funny Girl, Legally Blonde) as Myrtle Gordon; Smith was joined in the cast by Nicola Hughes and Benjamin Walker, among others. With book and direction by Ivo Van Hove, the impressionistic, heightened Opening Night sharply divided critics and audiences alike and closed after just 10 weeks. But the final four performances at the Gielgud Theatre were recorded for a cast album which is released today on CD and digital formats in advance of the show's one-night-only New York debut this coming Monday night at The Town Hall. That sold-out concert will feature such performers as Patti LuPone, Sara Bareilles, Tony nominee Darren Criss, and Wainwright himself.  Amazon orders will dispatch for arrival on September 26; copies can be ordered directly from Center Stage Records, too.

    The Françoise Hardy albums seem to be new 2025 mixes on the previously issued Lp tracks - and then stereo mixes for the B-Sides, and EP tracks bundled inside the expanded track listings.
