The Song Is You: SING Premieres Previously Unreleased Live Sinatra on "At The Hollywood Bowl"

Frank Sinatra At The Hollywood Bowl

The Voice is back.

On October 3, the SING label - an offshoot of the blockchain tech company - will premiere Frank Sinatra At The Hollywood Bowl 1943-1948, bringing together eighteen tracks on CD and eleven on vinyl from the late legend's early performances at the storied Hollywood venue.  This landmark title will be followed during the holiday season by Christmas on the Air and a vinyl-exclusive box set entitled Long Ago, Far Away.  All tracks on these collections have been mastered from original broadcast sources.

At The Hollywood Bowl, recorded during Sinatra's time at Columbia Records, preserves Sinatra's performances from various evenings including a lengthy set on August 14, 1943 in which he offered some of the songs most associated with him throughout his lifetime including Arthur Altman and Jack Lawrence's "All or Nothing at All" (a million-selling chart-topper the same year for Sinatra) and Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's "The Song Is You" from Music in the Air.

The collection draws extensively on the Broadway repertoire of the era with beautiful interpretations from the young artist of such classics as Rodgers and Hammerstein's "If I Loved You" and "Soliloquy" from Carousel; Kern and Hammerstein's "Ol' Man River" from Show Boat (which Sinatra would memorably perform on screen in MGM's 1946 Kern biopic Till the Clouds Roll By and reinvent, like "Soliloquy," with added gravitas on the towering 1963 album The Concert Sinatra); Irving Berlin's "The Girl That I Marry" from Annie Get Your Gun; Cole Porter's "Night and Day" from Gay Divorce; and the Gershwins' "Embraceable You" from Girl Crazy.  Jack Haley, the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, introduces Sinatra's performance of Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne's "Time After Time" at the August 8, 1948 Music for the Wounded benefit concert.

Charles L. Granata, Sinatra historian and producer of SiriusXM's Nancy for Frank radio program between 2007 and 2021, has provided the comprehensive liner notes for SING's releases.  He shares in the press release, "Frank Sinatra was one of America's first multi-media superstars.  As prolific as he was in the recording studio, his work on radio was even more extensive - and equally important in the overarching scheme of his sixty-plus year career. What makes it essential is that on the radio - and during early concert performances of the 1940s - Frank Sinatra sang tunes that he never otherwise recorded. Many are top-tier songs by Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, the Gershwins, Cahn and Styne, and others. He also relied on contemporary pop tunes of the day that also went unrecorded. Thus, the radio years offer us a plethora of great songs by Sinatra that we'd otherwise never hear if not for these recorded broadcasts and stage performances."

Granata, who currently hosts Sinatra Standard Time on San Diego's KSDS-FM, continues, "These recordings have circulated for decades, with inferior sonic quality.  I'm amazed that SING has been able to locate and compile their collections from some very high-quality sources. These are historically essential recordings, and deserve to be preserved and shared with anyone who values the 'Golden Age' of traditional American pop music. They really help round out and offer a fuller view of Sinatra's contributions to American pop music, culture and style."

While all eighteen songs are on the CD edition (including two bonus tracks from an NBC Radio broadcast of the Sinatra-hosted Your Hit Parade), the single vinyl LP offers eleven highlights from the three concert appearances at the Bowl.  In any format, these tracks represent The Great American Songbook at its most moving, and Sinatra in some of his most formative years and purest as a vocalist.

Both formats are due on October 3.  Watch this space for more information on Christmas on the Air and the Long Ago, Far Away box set from SING.  You'll find the full track listings below as well as pre-order links.  As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

I really am tired of these “vinyl exclusive” reissues. If they don’t want to go the CD route, at least do a digital release!

Guys, this is literally in the opening paragraph:

"This landmark title will be followed during the holiday season by Christmas on the Air and a vinyl-exclusive box set entitled Long Ago, Far Away."

The link for the CD is for the Hollywood Bowl. The "vinyl exclusive" Tom M. complained about in the first comment is not the Hollywood Bowl — it's the Long Ago, Far Away vinyl-exclusive box set mentioned in the first full paragraph and AGAIN in the final paragraph:

"Watch this space for more information on Christmas on the Air and the Long Ago, Far Away box set from SING."

That's the link to the Hollywood Bowl CD. The vinyl-exclusive Long Ago, Far Away box set – which is a different product – is mentioned in the first full paragraph and again in the final paragraph: "Watch this space for more information on Christmas on the Air and the Long Ago, Far Away box set from SING."

After a LONG draught from the FS library, these are very much welcomed by fans of Mr. S. Thanks to Chuck for continuing his devotion to releasing "new" material. Sadly, those who hold all of the jewels from the Capitol & Reprise libraries seem to be completely ignorant of the fact that we still hunger to hear the vast number of "goodies" still unheard by public ears.

Thanks as always for your extensive information about new releases and we certainly look forward to the "Christmas On Air" and "Long Ago & Far Away" releases.
