After teasing it last year - and not long after this year's release of a similar Ray of Light-era remix collection - Madonna will explore rare and unreleased material tied to another one of her most celebrated albums of the '90s, Bedtime Stories, with another EP of unissued tracks.
Bedtime Stories - The Untold Chapter, available November 28, will offer eight remixes, demos and outtakes from the Queen of Pop's sixth album, originally released in 1994. In addition to previously released mixes of the singles "Secret" and "Human Nature," the EP includes versions of tracks like "Love Won't Wait" - a Shep Pettibone collaboration ultimately recorded by Gary Barlow of British boy band Take That - along with alternate versions of the Dallas Austin collaborations "Let Down Your Guard" and "Freedom," released as a B-side to "Secret" and on the compilation Carnival! The Rainforest Foundation, respectively. The EP will be available on black vinyl or part of a 2CD set that pairs the set with the Bedtime Stories album, which itself will be reissued on silver vinyl. The artwork includes outtakes from a shoot with photographer Paolo Roversi that were vetoed by Warner for the album cover; orders from Madonna's or Rhino's official stores will include prints of said photos. (One was used for the "Bedtime Story" single.)
Bedtime Stories found Madonna entering uncharted territory in several ways: after a stunning run of more than two dozen Top 10 hits through the '80s and '90s, the singer was facing some of her biggest backlash yet after the 1992 album Erotica and a companion coffee table book, Sex, featuring boundary-pushing photos of Madonna and others. Despite strong sales, critics and even fans were wondering if she'd finally crossed a line; Madonna herself responded in kind, cutting a torchy ballad, "I'll Remember," for the soundtrack to the dramatic film With Honors and earning a No. 2 hit. It was time for a new direction. Working with new-to-her collaborators like British dance producer Nellee Hooper, Dallas Austin (a collaborator with Boyz II Men and TLC), new jack swing and R&B pioneer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Icelandic avant-pop star Björk and others, Bedtime Stories was interested in the realms of the romantic and sensuous, but largely devoid of more carnal lyrics. (Single "Human Nature" did see Madonna address the Sex backlash clearly, with a defiant "I'm not sorry.") With more nods to R&B and even hip-hop than ever before, Bedtime Stories unlocked a new group of fans and yielded the hits "Secret" (a smoldering R&B jam with Austin that hit No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100) and "Take a Bow" (the Babyface-assisted ballad that became her 11th No. 1 hit).
Madonna, who signed a new catalogue and publishing deal with longtime home Warner Music in 2021, survived a bacterial infection that briefly resulted in a medically induced coma in 2023; it briefly delayed the start of her well-received, hits-focused Celebration Tour. She's next set to release a new album in 2026 with producer Stuart Price, who collaborated with her on the blockbuster Confessions on a Dance Floor in 2005. I will buy most reissues like this from her but I wish they would just go in chronological order it seems kind of haphazard. I will not see her live again twice was enough. She puts on a good show for sure but the hours of waiting and having to drive home from DC to Richmond at 2 am are not for me any more too old for that mess.
I'm i missing something ? This came out in the MID 1990's [1994], yet this special edition is coming out now ? Meaning November 28th ? Why wasn't this released last year ?
A classic case of music business math! Plenty of ostensible deluxe anniversary editions have missed and certainly will miss their target by as much as a year. Just the way it goes, for whatever reason.
