After a yearlong hiatus, Light in the Attic's Nancy Sinatra Archival Series is continuing on December 5 with an expanded and remastered reissue of 1969's Nancy on both CD and LP. Her sixth and final studio album for the label, the Billy Strange-helmed LP offered a cross-section of rock, pop, soul, and country tunes as only Sinatra could have delivered them.
Nancy arrived in the wake of producer-songwriter Lee Hazlewood's unexpected move to Sweden. Hazlewood had produced all of Nancy's Reprise albums to that point (including the soundtrack to her television special Movin' with Nancy, not yet a part of the Archival Series) but with his departure, arranger-guitarist Strange would move up into the producer's chair. Billy also appeared on Nancy as co-writer of "Memories." The ballad by Billy and Mac Davis was written for Elvis Presley's 1968 "comeback" special. Davis experienced his breakthrough as a songwriter under Sinatra's aegis at her Boots Enterprises publishing firm, and two other songs of his are featured on Nancy: the Delaney Bramlett co-write "God Knows I Love You" and his solo "I'm Just in Love."
Nancy also offers the vocalist's interpretations of newly-minted standards from Ron Miller and Orlando Murden ("For Once in My Life," first recorded by Connie Haines at Motown and already a hit for Stevie Wonder and Tony Bennett in very different arrangements; Nancy's dad would release his own version on Reprise in 1969), The Doors (their chart-topping "Light My Fire" which had, in turn, led to a slowed-down hit version by Jose Feliciano), and John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins ("Son of a Preacher Man," a top ten success for Dusty Springfield on both sides of the Atlantic). Nancy tapped "Elusive Butterfly" songwriter Bob Lind for "Long Time Woman." In a 2007 interview, he remembered, "[She presented] my song with a simple, unadorned honesty that compels one to listen and feel...When I wrote 'Long Time Woman,' I never thought it would ever be covered--much less by a woman. But she sings it with a powerful restraint, never giving it more than it needs. I love it."
Luther Dixon and Al Smith's "Big Boss Man" added a dash of the blues to the mix, while Nancy dug back to the late 1920s for the tender "My Mother's Eyes." With a song about Mother, one about Father can't be too far behind - so Sinatra chose Michael Leonard and Herbert Martin's sweet "My Dad (My Pa)," previously recorded by Barbra Streisand on her My Name Is Barbra LP. Don Lanier and Red Steagall's "Here We Go Again" had been successful in both country and R&B veins-Ray Charles melded both on his 1967 recording-and Sinatra opted for the former approach on Nancy. Lawrence Castleman's slow-burning "Just Bein' Plain Old Me" rounded out the album which proved to be one of Nancy's most varied for Reprise.
Light in the Attic's upcoming edition adds three bonus tracks including an early, previously unreleased take of Lind's "Long Time Woman" produced by Lee Hazlewood from the Nancy and Lee sessions; Don Randi is heard on harpsichord. The 1969 single of Murray Wecht's "Drummer Man" b/w Mac Davis and Larry Collins' "Home" is also included. (As is customary for this series, the 1996 Sundazed reissue of Nancy included a different complement of bonus tracks other than "Home" which is on both reissues.)
John Baldwin has newly remastered Nancy, and the CD edition boasts a 24-page booklet with detailed liner notes in its digipak. Though singles would continue to trickle out on Reprise through 1971, Sinatra wouldn't release another full-length solo album until 1972's Nancy and Lee Again, a reunion with Hazlewood which LITA reissued in 2023. Woman, her only solo long-player for RCA Victor, followed. Woman has never seen CD release; hopefully it's slated for a future volume of LITA's Archival Series. In the meantime, the expanded Nancy is due on December 5. You'll find the track listing and pre-order links below. As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

I ordered both the cd and lp ( lp is a gift). This is my favorite Nancy Sinatra album. I'm glad it's being released in both formats. Light In the Attic does a wonderful job.
