Welcome to another edition of The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts. We've got an unreleased outtake from The Beatles; a favorite '80s band re-recording a deep cut; and a rock legend recruiting an unexpected guest on a new mix of their latest single - plus late period greatness from The Go-Betweens, Glenn Frey cutting standards and more.
The Beatles, "I've Just Seen a Face (Take 3)" (Apple/Capitol/UMe) (Apple / Amazon)
The Beatles are previewing the upcoming Anthology Collection with the previously unreleased Take 3 of "I've Just Seen a Face" - one of 13 tracks premiering on the set which is due in full on November 21. This rough and unvarnished take includes a bit of chatter between Paul, John, and George (with a humorous Lennon quip directed at Lonnie Donegan) and emphasizes McCartney and the band's taut musicianship in rollicking style.
Duran Duran, "SHADOWS ON YOUR SIDE" (Tape Modern/BMG) (Apple / Amazon)
The U.K. hitmakers have certainly cornered the market on Halloween since the release of 2023's Danse Macabre, a thematic collection of covers, new songs and revisited deep cuts that reunited the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers with founding guitarist Andy Taylor and his longtime replacement Warren Cuccurullo. Since 2022, the band has played special shows on Halloween, with this year's set for Co-Op Live in Manchester, England. Ahead of that show, they've dropped a rearranged version of "Shadows on Your Side," an album cut from 1983's Seven and the Ragged Tiger, with Andy Taylor again returning on guitar.
Aerosmith & YUNGBLUD, "My Only Angel (Desert Road Version)" (Capitol) (Apple / Amazon)
An alternate acoustic mix of the new single from Aerosmith and YUNGBLUD's forthcoming One More Time EP - this time with banjo from none other than comedian Steve Martin. (The Only Murders in the Building star shared a stranger-than-fiction text between himself and The Demon of Screamin', frontman Steven Tyler, that offers...a little insight on how it came together. He is sadly not in the accompanying music video, seen above.)
The Go-Betweens, The Friends of Rachel Worth / Bright Yellow, Bright Orange / Oceans Apart / Nachtmix 99 (Domino)
Friends: Apple / Amazon
Bright Yellow: Apple / Amazon
Oceans: Apple / Amazon
Nachtmix: Apple / Amazon
In 2000, Australian songwriters Robert Forster and Grant McLennan reunited their post-punk act The Go-Betweens after more than a decade away. They'd record three albums together, a burst of creativity that was sadly curtailed when McLennan died of a heart attack a year after the release of Oceans Apart in 2005. In 2024, Domino capped a three-volume archival series of material from the group that included remasters of all their albums on vinyl. The LPs from the third set, which covered the reunion era, are now available to stream: The Friends of Rachel Bloom (2000), Bright Yellow, Bright Orange (2003) and Oceans Apart, plus the debut release of Nachtmix 99, an acoustic radio session Forster and McLennan did the year before Rachel Worth's release.
Glenn Frey, After Hours (Deluxe Edition) (Rhino) (Apple / Amazon)
Originally released by UMe and redelivered digitally by Rhino - home to the Eagles catalogue - After Hours featured the band's frontman Glenn Frey as you'd never heard him before, taking on classic pop and standards like "The Look of Love," "The Shadow of Your Smile," The Beach Boys' "Caroline, No" and even tracks popularized by Tony Bennett ("The Good Life," "I Wanna Be Around"). It was Frey's last studio work before his passing in 2016. The deluxe edition features more tracks than the standard offering.
Andrew Lloyd Webber, EVITA (The Other Songs) (Apple / Amazon)
The Other Songs has released the full 10-track album live EVITA: The Album, capturing the electrifying production that entranced the West End this past summer. The cast includes Rachel Zegler, Diego Andres Rodriguez, James Olivas, Aaron Lee Lambert, and Bella Brown. Both CD and LP formats are due in early 2026 and can be pre-ordered now - but, wait, there's more! The Other Songs has also revealed that a complete live recording of the production will follow later in 2026 (formats to be announced).
The Blasters, American Music / Non-Fiction (Liberation Hall)
American: Apple / Amazon
Non-Fiction: Apple / Amazon
Liberation Hall has broken out two of the four studio albums from their Record Store Day box set of music from rockabilly revivalists The Blasters. American Music (1980) and Non-Fiction (1983) built the foundation for Dave and Phil Alvin's distinct rootsy sound, and still sound terrific more than four decades later. American Music is currently available on CD as well (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada), with Non-Fiction following on November 7.
Yusuf Lateef, Jazz Mood (Remastered 2025) / Hank Mobley, Jazz Message #2 (Remastered 2025) (Craft)
Jazz Mood: Apple / Amazon
Jazz Message #2: Apple / Amazon
Craft's latest digital jazz remasters include the debut album from Yusuf Lateef (taken from his second-ever session, the first in a series of groundbreaking hybrids of jazz and Eastern-influenced music) and one of the first for tenor sax icon Hank Mobley. Both were originally released on the Savoy Records label.
Patty Larkin, Tango (High Street) (Apple / Amazon)
Folk-pop singer/songwriter/guitarist Patty Larkin moved from Rounder's Philo Records to Windham Hill's High Street imprint as the '80s turned into the '90s. Tango, her first album there, is now digitally available with an assist from the folks at SuperVisible Multi Media.
Finally, TSD would like to take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Dave Ball, a wide-ranging electronic musician best known for his work as one half of the synthpop duo Soft Cell. Alongside singer Marc Almond, Bell's keyboard textures - grimy and grungy but sleek and danceable - helped usher in a revolution on the U.K. (and later U.S.!) charts. Years after their touchstone covers of "Tainted Love" and "Where Did Our Love Go" and the original "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" helped form their brace of U.K. Top 5 hits, the duo reunited and stuck to it in 2018, diving through their archives for deluxe editions and box sets (including a forthcoming expansion of 1983 sophomore album The Art of Falling Apart) while also recording the new album *Happiness Not Included in 2022. In his emotional remembrance, Almond shared that Ball had heard Soft Cell's recently completed (and now final) album Danceteria - a continuation of the group's commitment to cutting-edge electronic dance grooves.
