"One, two, Freddy's comin' for you..."
Varese Sarabande is making horror fans' dreams come true with an eight-disc box set of the complete scores to the A Nightmare on Elm Street film franchise.
The late Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic introduced fans to the sleepy suburb of Springwood, terrorized by the sadistic Freddy Krueger. With a hideously burned face, a glove boasting razor sharp blades and an iconic fedora and striped-sweater combo, Krueger, "the bastard son of a thousand maniacs," was an undead child killer who sought revenge in the subconscious, torturing and killing his victims in their dreams. The franchise, which grossed more than $500 million worldwide and put indie studio New Line Cinema on the map, sprawled to seven films through the '80s and '90s.
Outside of 1987's A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors, which featured a screenplay co-written by Craven and the return of fan favorite Heather Langenkamp as survivor Nancy Thompson, the franchise would get progressively sillier in its gleeful mayhem, and Robert Englund embraced his signature role of Freddy with relish in both film and television. Craven and Langenkamp returned for 1994's excellentNew Nightmare, a film depicting Krueger as a villainous entity who emerges from the underworld to challenge the real-life crew of the original film. Englund would strap on the glove one last time in 2003, for the years-in-development crossover Freddy Vs. Jason, in which he squared off against the hockey-masked serial killer of the Friday the 13th series.
For this new box set, all the Nightmare scores, including titles by Charles Bernstein (whose original theme anchors many of the films in the series), Christopher Young, Angelo Badalamenti, Craig Safan and others, have been greatly expanded from their original Varese album programs. Many discs feature the original album alongside a host of unreleased cues, demos for the original film and even original music for the Freddy's Dead video game from 1991 and Harry Manfredini's theme to Friday the 13th, as heard in Freddy Vs. Jason. Artist Shawn Conn designed the box set and individual disc art, all of which join together to form a new piece of Freddy art (original album sleeves are featured in each album's booklet). The box's finishing touch is a unique outer sleeve: a knitted cover in the style of Freddy's red and green sweater!
This box is limited to just 2,000 copies, so you won't want to sleep on this one! Full specs are below.
