Arcadia's "So Red the Rose" Fumbling Toward a Release Date

February 1, 2010 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

(UPDATE 10:40 a.m.) Duran Duran's representative Katy Krassner responded with lightning speed to the inquiry about the press release: "There is no set release date...we will update the site when there is one. This was just EMI's updated press materials on the release." So while fans have to wait a bit for the scoop, know that it'll be here soon enough. Thanks to Katy for her response!

Duran Duran fans who've spent years fighting to defend the worthiness of the New Wave quintet enjoyed something of a vindication last year, when EMI released a fantastic double-disc expanded version of the band's classic LP Rio alongside Live at Hammersmith '82!, an oft-bootlegged set at the venerable London arena recorded by the BBC.

Luckier still, EMI announced around the time of those releases that they planned to expand the catalogue even further in 2010 - and formally announced in November and December that expansions of the band's first and third records (1981's Duran Duran and 1983's Seven and the Ragged Tiger) would be released in March. Even better: a deluxe reissue of So Red the Rose, the only album by Duran side-project Arcadia (comprised of Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor), was announced for February 9 in the U.S.

Of course, reissues aren't always perfect, and in January it was announced that the Arcadia reissue would be bumped back to April, so EMI could release the new titles chronologically. (Why EMI was so worried about this, given that the first reissue they put out was the band's second record, still confuses me.) All was quiet on the Duran reissue front since.

Today, perplexingly, the Duran Duran Web site has posted a press release for the deluxe So Red the Rose, with the previously announced track listing but no release date. While I have no idea what this could possibly mean (I have e-mailed the band's media address to get some clarification), catalogue fans can at least get excited that some really lavish Duran Duran reissues are coming out this year...at some point, anyway.

Hit the jump for the full press release.

Arcadia So Red The Rose - 2 CD + DVD
EMI Catalogue Cat No: 606 6812

Arcadia were formed by three members of Duran Duran, Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor. They released one album 'So Red The Rose', which went Platinum, and reached #30 in the UK & #23 in the US. The album featured four singles, 'Goodbye Is Forever', 'The Promise', 'The Flame', and UK/US Top 10 hit, 'Election Day'.

Along with three Duran Duran members, there was also a wide range of famous guests on 'So Red The Rose' including; David Gilmour, Sting (backing vocals on 'The Promise'), Herbie Hancock & Grace Jones (spoken word on 'The Flame' & 'Election Day').

The additional DVD was originally released on VHS in 1987. It follows the filming of five clips from the album 'So Red The Rose' & the fascinating combination of directors, locations, behind the scene footage & photographic montages which come together to give an insight into the world of video production. The collection of videos including Arcadia's first single 'Election Day' are shown in full, including Dean Chamberlain's rarely seen interpretation of the song 'Missing'.

All Music Guide describe 'So Red The Rose' as "the best album Duran never made".

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.
