New Release: Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, "Greatest Hits" (UPDATED FEB. 7)

February 5, 2010 By Mike Duquette 1 Comment

Looks like Hip-O Select isn't the only label catering to the upcoming surge of interest in The Runaways. The influential girl-punk group's most famous member, Joan Jett, is prepping a new solo compilation set for release March 9, less than two weeks before the release of the new biopic of the band.

The Amazon pre-order page - as of yet, one of the only public sources of info for the compilation (there's not even a mention on the official sites for Jett or Blackheart Records, her label) - has a full track list, 21 songs over two discs. The other bits of info are cryptic: the set "features seven songs featured in the film The Runaways including one previously unreleased track. Re-recorded material featuring several Runaways favorites. Remastered original material."

Trying to figure out what that exactly means requires a bit of a crash course in Jett lore. Most of The Runaways' catalogue was released by Mercury (hence the Hip-O Select release); the exception would be their final album, distributed in the U.S. as Little Lost Girls by Rhino Records. From there, Jett's career with The Blackhearts bounced around distributors. Many of the releases bore her own Blackheart Records imprint (I've interpreted that as a possible sign that she owns her own masters), but she'd be signed to distribution deals with MCA, CBS and Warners during the last few decades before going fully independent by the mid-1990s.

UPDATE 2/7/2010: This blog post has a bit more information, although I'm not sure what the source is. According to the post, the re-recorded songs are (not surprisingly) three of The Runaways' tracks ("You Drive Me Wild," "School Days" and "Love is Pain"). Additionally, the unreleased song is apparently the track "I Want You." Now, as stated below, there is a song by that title on her Notorious album from 1991. Given its place in the track order, perhaps there was another version (or another song entirely with the same name) recorded somewhere between 1980 and 1981. (Also, turntablists will note that the set is due on double vinyl as well.)

The track list has been updated accordingly. Take a look at it after the jump, noting the origins of each song. Once we absolutely lock down what sources the compilation comes from, we'll let you know.

Disc 1

  1. Cherry Bomb - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth - Blackheart/MCA, 1984)*
  2. You Drive Me Wild - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (new recording)*
  3. School Days - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (new recording)*
  4. Love is Pain - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from I Love Rock N' Roll - Boardwalk, 1981)
  5. Bad Reputation - Joan Jett (from Joan Jett - independent, 1980/Bad Reputation - Boardwalk, 1981)**
  6. You Don't Know What You've  Got - Joan Jett (from Joan Jett - independent, 1980/Bad Reputation - Boardwalk, 1981)**
  7. I Want You - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (previously unreleased version) ***
  8. I Love Rock N' Roll - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from I Love Rock N' Roll - Boardwalk, 1981)
  9. (I'm Gonna) Run Away - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from I Love Rock N' Roll - Boardwalk, 1981)
  10. Crimson and Clover - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from I Love Rock N' Roll - Boardwalk, 1981)

Disc 2

  1. Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah) - Joan Jett (from Joan Jett - independent, 1980/Bad Reputation - Boardwalk, 1981)**
  2. The French Song - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Album - Blackheart/MCA, 1983)
  3. Everyday People - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Album - Blackheart/MCA, 1983)
  4. Fake Friends - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Album - Blackheart/MCA, 1983)
  5. Light of Day - The Barbusters (from Light of Day - Blackheart/CBS, 1987)
  6. I Hate Myself for Loving You -  Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Up Your Alley - Blackheart/CBS, 1987) ****
  7. Backlash - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Notorious - Blackheart/CBS, 1991)
  8. Activity Grrl - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Flashback - Blackheart, 1993)
  9. Love is All Around - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Fit to Be Tied - Blackheart/Mercury, 1997)
  10. Androgynous - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Naked - Blackheart, 2004)
  11. A.C.D.C. - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts (from Sinner - Blackheart, 2006)

* - Originally recorded by The Runaways
** - Joan Jett and Bad Reputation are the exact same record. The latter was merely distributed on a label.
*** - Possibly a previously unreleased version of a track released on Notorious - Blackheart/CBS, 1991
**** - Another Blackhearts version of this song exists as well, on the Fit to Be Tied compilation. According to the Allmusic review, Blackheart didn't have the rights to the original 1987 master, although subsequent compilations, like the Japan-only 2003 compilation Jett Rock, use the hit version.

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Just in case you'd be interested, Fowley tried the same experiment with an all-boy teen band called The Quick. Their debut, released on Mercury Records, was called Mondo Deco. I really love the album. Some important members went on to other things. I'll leave the rest to you for discovery. Lemme know if you want to hear some music, Mike.

Love what you're doing with this site. Keep it up!
