Rarities Editions: Round Two

March 30, 2010 By Mike Duquette 3 Comments

The Second Disc did a run-through earlier this month concerning Universal Music Enterprises' "Rarities Editions," repackagings of the second discs of various Universal Deluxe Editions. Some of them were worth it if you avoided buying the Deluxe Edition before, but a few lacked the bonus tracks that were on some of the deluxe titles' first discs.

However, they must have been enough of a success for UMe, because another seven in the series have been announced for April 27. Thus, it would be worth taking a look at these titles and assessing their worth to you, the buyer. Read on after the jump.

Cream - Disraeli Gears (Reaction/Polydor, 1967)

The second disc of this deluxe edition had Disraeli Gears in its original mono mix and about half of the BBC Sessions compilation from 2003 (save about 80 seconds of interviews with Eric Clapton). Seeing as how the first disc had the stereo album and only one unreleased track (next to six other demos and alternates found on the 1997 box set Those Were the Days), one could argue you're not missing much if you pick this up.

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico (Verve, 1967)

Continuing the trend of putting out Rarities Editions that thrifty fans might want, Disc 2 of the deluxe VU debut had the mono mix of the album and all the single masters. Considering that the first disc of the set - the stereo album and a few tracks from Nico's Chelsea Girl - was already available (and kind of padded), this is something you might want to get. (But why market this as a Rarities Edition and not The Velvet Underground & Nico in mono?)

Eric Clapton - 461 Ocean Boulevard (RSO, 1974)

Another nice, isolated second disc - a 1974 live set recorded over two nights at the Hammersmith Odeon - but again, why not market it as its own live record? Also, fans might miss the more-or-less previously released bonus cuts at the end of the first disc.

Marvin Gaye - I Want You (Motown, 1976)

This second disc boasts 13 tracks of outtakes and alternates, but hardcore collectors will want the three single-only mixes that close the first disc.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - One More from the Road (MCA, 1976)

I don't get this one: the end of the live set and a bunch of alternates? Get the original deluxe edition, as differently mixed as it may be.

Various Artists - The Commitments: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (MCA, 1991)

Another oddly packaged Rarities Edition. The Deluxe Edition was both of The Commitments albums - the 1991 soundtrack and its 1992 sequel album - plus half of  Andrew Strong's 1993 solo record - so just the second disc provides listeners with an album and a half - not much of a deal at all, really.

Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell (MCA, 1994)

The second disc on this set was nothing but edits and remixes, so those who wanted them for less than $30 the first time around are finally rewarded.

Mike Duquette

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

When the first round came out, I thought this was a stupid idea. However, I am definitely getting the VU/Nico one.
