Say Hey, It's Record Store Day

April 17, 2010 By Mike Duquette 2 Comments

If today is April 17 (which it likely is) and you're reading this post and not going to your local indie record store, then stop reading and go! Today is indeed Record Store Day, a celebration of one of the best things music has to offer us - great places to find great music.

As someone who works in a store that sells music (but is the antithesis of an indie store), I can comfortably say that there's nothing better than going to a real record store and coming home with a bag full of good tunes. I'm sure you loyal readers can vouch for this notion yourselves. So get out there, support your local and when you're done, come back and share your musical success stories with your friends at The Second Disc!

Mike Duquette

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

15 LPs INCLUDING a mint copy of No Reason to Cry by Eric Clapton. It's great to hobnob, learn, find new stuff to enjoy, and everything else that a visit will reward you with.

Two indie stores in my area were participating so I was able to hit both of those this morning. The first store had a line of 60 or so people waiting to get in when the doors opened! They had some great deals and several RSD only items which (I'm sure) helped draw the large crowd. It's a tiny store, so it got crowded very quickly. There I found CDs of Who's Next (Deluxe Edition), two Beatles remasters (Hard Day's Night and Revolver) and the Black Crowes - Before the Frost. Got all of that for $15 and change, including tax!
The other store is much larger, but wasn't participating in RSD to such a degree. There, I picked up (on CD - didn't have any luck with vinyl at all today) Johnny Winter - The Woodstock Experience, John Coltrane - Ascension (remastered) and another Beatles remaster - Abby Road. All that for $17. I thought I came out pretty well getting all of those for less than $35. Thanks, Record Store Day!
