Rhino Handmade has announced its latest title, a thoroughly expanded edition of Delaney & Bonnie's seminal live LP On Tour with Eric Clapton.
In late 1969, Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett embarked on a killer tour that included some of the best blues and rock musicians of the era. Clapton was the featured performer, to be sure, but that tour also included star turns from Leon Russell, Dave Mason of Traffic, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon and Bobby Whitlock (who would form Derek and The Dominos with Clapton) and a performer credited as L'Angelo Mysterioso on the original album but known to the world as George Harrison.
The resultant live album, released on Atco in 1970, was an eight-track affair culled from two shows at Fairfield Halls in Croydon in December 1969. But this new deluxe edition ups the ante considerably, offering not only those two complete Fairfield shows but another two shows from that same period, bringing the box to four discs.
The set is available for pre-order now (expected release date is July 20) for $79.98 (and eligible for free shipping through the label's Web site) and you can get it here.
But before you get the tracks after the jump, The Second Disc might as well let you know about another live catalogue release coming through Rhino: The Grateful Dead have released the latest release in their Road Trips series (Vol. 3, No. 3), featuring nearly the complete Fillmore East show from May 15, 1970 over three discs (just a bit before the release of Workingman's Dead that same year) and, with the first wave of releases, a bonus disc that includes more songs from the same set as well as some from a show at Meramec College from the previous night.
That set can be pre-ordered here, and specs for both can be seen after the jump.Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, On Tour with Eric Clapton: Deluxe Edition (Rhino Handmade, 2010 - original album released as Atco SD 33-326, 1970)

Here I go about "editing" again (ha!), but I wish this latest Road Trips release had been expanded to a four-disc set (they've done it before... The Closing of Winterland release, for instance) and the complete early and late shows had been included. It's still a lot of great music, certainly, so I might still get it.
Sticking many of the dropped tracks on to the bonus disc seems pointless though... It's taken out of context now, and unless you order early you can't get it. Better to just make it a four-disc and be done with it.
To the opposite extreme, the D&B set looks AWESOME... Probably too rich me, OK definitely too rich, but I'd love to hear it. Maybe they can make this available as a download for less at some point, or just release the complete show of what made up the original album as separate release after the box set has its run? Just like the Who's Live at Leeds has been expanded to the complete show.
Really though, it seems odd that Rhino can put out several D&B shows in their entirety, but can't give us the complete shows from a spectacular night of Grateful Dead music. Believe me, the Deadheads wouldn't balk at dropping a few dollars more for the added music.

The D&B box looks like a beaut...it's going to be very difficult to resist buying this, even though my wallet says "Stay far away!!!"
RoyalScam says
Looks nice, but the price is ridiculous. Ditto to the price of the Mellencamp box. I've spoken to several potential fans that would have grabbed this for $50, but will sit on the sidelines instead.
Joe Marchese says
Indeed. I can't fathom the pricing of the Mellencamp box at all...at least the D&B is consistent with Rhino Handmade's usual $20/disc price structure, which I assume has been set by the bean counters (and thankfully, on the whole, hasn't increased since the days of RHM's initial releases.)
