Details have arrived regarding the long-awaited deluxe edition of Station to Station, David Bowie's 1976 album and the vehicle for his "Thin White Duke" character.
Recorded while Bowie was arguably his most drug-addled, Station to Station featured the U.K. Top 10 hit "Golden Years," as well as singles "TVC 15" and "Wild is the Wind." The promotion of the LP saw Bowie in some of his most outrageous days; interviews were punctuated by the singer extolling the virtues of facism, and controversy boiled over when Bowie was allegedly photographed in mid-Nazi salute (in retrospect, many believe he was caught in mid-wave). Bowie would follow this up with the so-called "Berlin trilogy" with Brian Eno, which put him closer to chemical recovery and greater critical acclaim.
The reissue comes in two heavy-duty sets. A three-disc version includes the original analogue master of the LP and two discs' of a famous, oft-bootlegged show at Nassau Coliseum. The set will be packaged in mini gatefold sleeves (including the original artwork preserved for compact disc and will come with three postcards and a 16-page booklet all stowed in a lid-top box (must be similarly packed as the recent Duran Duran remasters).
A deluxe edition, meanwhile, will include those three discs along with two other CDs - the 1985 CD master of Station to Station and an EP of single mixes - three vinyl records comprising Station to Station and Nassau Coliseum '76, a DVD of various new and remastered mixes of the the album and lots of other collectibles.
Both sets will be available on September 20 in the U.K. Hit the jump to check the track lists.David Bowie, Station to Station: Special Edition (EMI BOWSTSX 2010)

I noticed the reales date was UK. Is the deluxe version being released stateside also (or least are DVD's region free)? This is one of my favorite albums and I will definitely need to own this. Can't wait to here the surround mixes.

My guess is it'll at least be imported and that the DVDs will be region free. I know EMI's Duran Duran remasters were. Of course those were also hideously delayed. Let's hope this one isn't.

some of that 1983 style: http://wallernotweller.wordpress.com/2010/05/22/review-david-bowie-lets-dance-emi-america/

Outrage. I didn't think of Bowie as one who would screw his fans in a time of economic crisis. Yet the only set that contains the much-anticipated 5.1 surround mix of Station To Station is a $200 deluxe set filled with vinyl and paper extras? For the love of fans who are not rich-as-sin, a bare-bones edition with the same digital discs should be made available too.
The simple edition with the 2 CDs of the concert is nice, but is too little.
Why have all the expertise go into making a 5.1 mix if there's only a couple dozen rich people in the whole world who can afford to hear it? It's classism or sumthin'! Well it pisses me off whatever it is. It's a shame, is what it is.
Mike Duquette says
You hit the nail right on the head, Will. Lavish packages are nice, but where were they when more people had money to burn?

I'm sick of this as well... it is either buy the standard thing or fork out tons of cash for a deluxe which duplicates so much stuff. If they at least did a vinyl box and a cd/dvd box, but being forced to buy the same content twice aas cd and vinyl makes me sick. If it was just the cds + the dvd, I'd rather buy it, but in this edition: a simple no-no, way too expensive and almost nothing new (the biggest laugh is a download exclusive which isn't even in the super-expensive box + I assume which you'll only get if you buy the complete album as download again, so you have to buy that as well to get everything)...

I for one don't mind spending the $ on the deluxe version for the vinyl alone, where the tru adio bliss will come from: http://indieethos.wordpress.com/2010/07/02/david-bowies-station-to-station-to-be-reissued-in-fancy-7-disc-package/
