A Wounded Bird Bonanza (EVEN MORE ADDED 7/30)

July 30, 2010 By Mike Duquette 8 Comments

Wounded Bird Records has just opened the floodgates and got a couple of interesting obscurities released or reissued on CD. There's a couple of notable names here, and at least one that looks to have bonus tracks. Hit the jump to see them all.

The next eight titles are already available, having been released on July 13. Order them at Wounded Bird's Web site here.

First up, there's two premiere CD issues from rock band Barnaby Bye. With a clutch of tunes penned by members Billy and Bobby Alessi (who'd have a Top 10 U.K. hit, "Oh Lori," as Alessi and contributed a song to the Ghostbusters soundtrack under the same name), these two Atlantic LPs are finally satisfying fans and collectors by being available on CD.

Next we have a buried treasure from Rick Springfield. The Aussie heartthrob may be best known for his early '80s hits like "Jessie's Girl" and "Don't Talk to Strangers" - or of course his turn as Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital - but Springfield had been pushing on as a musician through the '70s as well. After two records for Capitol, he cut a disc for Chelsea Records called Wait for Night. It didn't chart, even when RCA licensed it and reissued it in the wake of the success of "Jessie's Girl," but its premiere release on CD closes the gap in Rick's discography on compact disc.

Rick Springfield, Wait for Night (Chelsea CHS-515, 1976/RCA AFL1-4235, 1982 - reissued Wounded Bird WOU-4235, 2010)

  8. Old Gangsters Never Die - 3:06
  9. Treat Me Gently in the Morning - 4:35
  10. Life is a Celebration - 3:04

Moving on to another Aussie musician, Billy Thorpe was a success in his home country in the '60s as leader of surf-rockers Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs. He would eke out some solo success in the U.S. with two prog-based albums, Children of the Sun and 21st Century Man, the latter of which is receiving its premiere on CD.

Billy Thorpe, 21st Century Man (Elektra 6E-294, 1980 - reissued Wounded Bird WOU-294, 2010)

Wounded Bird has three releases from The Blasters, a blues/rockabilly/punk outfit from L.A. in the early '80s. Originally fronted by brothers Phil and Dave Alvin, Dave left and was the guitarist for influential punk band X in the latter part of the '80s. (The Blasters' own "Long White Cadillac" later became a Top 40 country hit for Dwight Yoakam.)

One of many rock one-offs in this batch is Mandala, a Canadian rock outfit best known for being an early band of Domenic Troiano's before joining with The James Gang and The Guess Who.

Mike Finnigan was a session keyboardist who recorded with a who's who of musicians in the '60s and '70s (Jimi Hendrix, Michael McDonald, Cher and Ringo Starr to name a few). His 1976 album for Warner Bros. (BSK-9244) is getting a CD issue - but no track list could be found at present.

There's a straight reissue of a record by Dutch guitarist virtuoso Jan Akkerman. Best known in the U.S. for his work with Focus (and the resultant Top 10 hit "Hocus Pocus"), Akkerman has gotten some reissues from Wounded Bird in the past, and 3 - only previously issued in Europe - is the latest of his records to get such treatment.

R&B/pop musician Stevie Woods may not be a household name, but some of the session guys he jammed with on his three Cotillion LPs are: Toto's Steve Lukather, Jerry Hey, Ray Parker, Jr., and Bill Champlin of Chicago all contributed. Here are all three back in print.

Here's an obscurity for the ages: Nine Ways to Win, a New Wave outfit produced by David Ferguson, a promoter/producer who provided an independent support for acts like Public Image Ltd. and Butthole Surfers.

Finally, there's one that has no track listing whatsoever just yet: a double-disc set for mid-'80s dance-rockers Until December. The 415 Sessions is going to compile the band's sole self-titled LP, plus remixes and B-sides. Should be fun stuff; when we get a track list, it'll go up here.

And a last title in the batch for September 7: a reissue of the only released LP by Quill, the first band to play after the rain stopped on the second day of Woodstock. It's not yet available for pre-order at the Wounded Bird Web site.

Wounded Bird has always been a bit of a mystery to me. Are they affiliated with the Warner Music Group? It seems that without fail the titles they license were originally released on a Warner label. What is the packaging like on their titles--is it as bare bones as is suggested by (typical) lack of bonus tracks on their reissues? Then there's the matter of their prices being too high to answer these questions myself.

No, they are independent. The guy running it used to be with One Way Records. He generally only licenses from Rhino/WB and Sony. Rhino charges a premium for bonus tracks (or, raises the required minimums) as they consider those to be a "compilation," so Wounded generally only does straight reissues or 2-fers of Rhino stuff. However, Sony does not have the same restrictions, so their Sony-licensed titles are ripe with bonus tracks.

        Quoting:

How much per track and what's the minimum # of tracks
that have to be used to qualify??

I see the pattern that reissue labels (in general), when they do single CD's from Rhino Handmade box sets, they aren't allowed to use extra songs.

Ah, finally, The Blasters stuff is being reissued. About time! I remember first hearing those guys in high school, just a few years after these albums came out. Classic. I'll be picking those up for sure.

Thanks, Mike... I wouldn't have known about this if it weren't for you!

Finally! I've been waiting years for Stevie Woods' 'Take Me To Your Heaven' to be reissued on CD. "Just Can't Win 'Em All" is a great "yacht rock" classic.
