The Complete Elvis Presley Masters. Go here. Talk below. Some reactions after the jump.
Well. First off, $749, plus tax and shipping, is a lot better than I'd expected.
The gerbils are turning in their wheels to determine what exactly goes where in the track lists. It's all in chronological order, which is probably more sensible than preserving the albums and singles. (Anyone with an iPod can do that.) I'm sure there's some stuff not included from other reissues (alternate takes, maybe?) but this is probably as definitive as ever.
Without further ado, the track lists:

Joe Marchese says
The wording "Limited Edition First Run" seems to imply that there will be an unlimited second pressing of this, perhaps at a lower cost minus many of the bells and whistles (similar to Reprise's re-release of the Sinatra "suitcase" in a smaller edition that fits nicely on the bookshelf). While this looks like a labor of love, $749.00 is a bit too rich for my blood. I'd definitely be in for the next pressing, though, if it comes with a much less hefty pricetag.
Anyone here actually buying this? I'd love to hear your thoughts when it arrives...
Bill B says
Ha ha. Just look at the Beatles mono box set. It was supposed to be limited edition too but once they realized there was money to be made they printed more. You can still get it a year later even though when it was first released there was a shortage which actually fueled demand (they know what they are doing).
As for it getting cheaper, maybe, but I wouldn't count on it. The Beatles mono set price may have went down a little but not much.
Mike Duquette says
I'm really cautious about the whole "limited edition first run" bit. I don't take it as an implication that there'll be a second/cheaper/less collectible pressing so much as I view it as potential wiggle room for such an occurrence. Then again, Sony is conceivably betting that this won't sell out like crazy (a viewpoint I'm not entirely sure I share; economic concerns aside, I've seen less popular titles in smaller quantities sell out quickly in my time as a collector), so they're possibly pushing the limited angle just in case they're wrong, at which point they can increase quantities through a new pressing later on.
RoyalScam says
I'll be waiting for the soon to come cheaper version with no hardcover book, or limited edition case. Bet it'll be in cardboard album replicas, no frills, and half the price.
Shaun says
"Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce," "Queenie Wahine's Papaya," and "Yoga Is As Yoga Does" totally ROCK!!
No, I'm just kidding. I've never heard those songs. The titles are hilarious though... I'm reminded of that old Eddie Murphy routine about Elvis' "movie years":
"Hey Elvis... Want some lemonade?"
"Lemonade! That cool, refreshing drink..."
Shaun says
"Do The Clam" and "The Whiffenpoof Song" look like classics too...
Don't get me wrong, I like Elvis. It's kinda easy to see how The King misplaced his crown for awhile though.
Now I'm off to find out what a Whiffenpoof is.
Mike Duquette says
Ha! My eyebrows raised a few times when I scanned the track lists. "He's Your Uncle Not Your Dad"? Hysterical.
Hank says
What's odd is that "Dominic" is listed; Elvis was apparently so embarassed by the song (a "Stay Away, Joe" song that Elvis sang to a bull) that it was never released during his lifetime. Shouldn't it be included (if at all) on one of the "Alternate/Outtake" discs?
By the way, back during the 1980's, a legendary vinyl bootleg entitled "Elvis' Greatest Shit!" collected most of the movie sondtrack songs mentioned. I'd reccommend googling it just to see the album cover.
Jerry says
Actually, the title "Dominick" refers to the bull seen in the film, but Elvis does NOT sing it to him. In film Elvis is heard singing the song while seen chasing several beautiful young ladies around a meadow. You have to hear the song in conjunction with the scene to understannd the symbolism. Quite amusing.
Hank says
Woops...I must confess, I've own several dozen Elvis CD's, but have yet to ever sit through even one of his movies.
Mike says
Some of the movie songs are dross but the worst may be some of the material cut for Paradise Hawaiian Style - "A Dog's Life" and "Datin'". Anyhow, I have ordred this set and cannot wait for it, even though I have all the masters on other discs and the the FTD releases. Some of the outtakes are interesting, including the "Viva Las Vegas" rehearsal.
When will Sony let us know that the 1,000 limited frist editions have sold out?
Jacob says
Sounds awesome, but not worth $749.
Daryl says
I have noticed a few discrepancies between the track listing here and at http://www.completeelvis.com First of all, http://www.completeelvis.com has totally omitted "Big Boots" (Track 30 on Disc 5) as listed here and "Let's Forget About The Stars" (Track 9 on Disc 16) also as listed here. Also, I noticed that "Unchained Melody" is listed twice at http://www.completeelvis.com (Discs 27 and 29) and only once here (Disc 29) There are two different versions of "Unchained Melody" (one from the 1977 LP "Moody Blue" and another version from a single released in 1978 "Unchained Melody / Softly As I Leave You" This single version was recorded in concert during the production of the posthumous television special, "Elvis In Concert." (It wasn't featured in the televsion special though). The recording was overdubbed too. The album version was overdubbed as well, though this was to correct Elvis' voice cutting out on the final notes. The undubbed versions of each of these performances can be found on the 1990 CD release "The Great Performances" (single version) and the 2002 FTD release "Spring Tours '77" (LP version)

By my math, the total number of tracks listed here is 813, one short of the 814 being advertised.

You're right. One of them must have gone missing when I did my formatting from the press release.

Not necessarily...it's all over the internets on various forums that at least one track is missing, and at least one site mentioned Sony knows about it and is saying nothing.
Who knows? Guess someone that ponied up $749 will have to report back whether or not they got taken for ONE DAMN TRACK!
Won't be me.

One further nice touch to the box would be a 15-20 bonus DVD showing the work that went into to restoring the masters - a little behind the scenes featurette with Ernst and Roger playing the tapes and explaining issues they faced. Ah well.

BTW...according to ElvisNews.com there are no missing tracks, it was a typo on the Sony presser. Sony confirmed that the two tracks missing from the copy are in fact on the boxed set. Only thing that's not is 1977's "Elvis In Concert", released just after he died.

Any information on a scaled down version of this boxset coming out later on, perhaps without the book. I know that there is a special advance copy of the set floating out there with just the CDs. For pictures, here's a link

According to http://www.completeelvis.com they have already sold more than 700 copies so far, as the counter on the website started at 1,000 and is now down to less than 300. Here's an article that provides some more information on this massive box set as well as a few other Elvis related upcoming releases (FTD releases, Sony Legacy release of "Elvis Presley", etc.)
