You've got to hand it to the folks at Collectors' Choice Music: when they launch a new catalogue initiative, they don't mess around. After an initial offering last month of 10 releases on the new Tartare imprint, CCM has just announced a further 20 titles to bolster the budding Tartare lineup. The genres covered in this batch are incredibly diverse: from folk songs to groovy psychedelia, polkas to 1990s jangle pop, deep soul to disco, jazz to country. In short, there really is something for everyone! Artists represented include the familiar (Sonny and Cher, Curtis Mayfield) and the obscure (Hirth Martinez, with his debut LP produced by Robbie Robertson of The Band, and Jon Astley, frequent Pete Townshend collaborator.)
For those not familiar with Tartare, here's the scoop: all titles are made-to-order; translation: all discs are CD-Rs. Each release includes original LP artwork with no new liner notes or additional information, and all discs are housed in standard jewel cases. To date, all of Tartare's offerings have been drawn from various labels under the Warner Music Group umbrella, including Warner Bros. Records, Elektra, Atlantic and Curtom. Each title is priced at $14.98 and is available directly through Collectors' Choice's website. Every title (including the 10 previously released) is available for ordering here.
Unlike the first group of releases, some of the titles here (by artists including Eddie Floyd, Sonny and Cher and Jean Ritchie) have been previously released on CD by labels such as Rhino and Sundazed. The only Tartare release to date to include bonus tracks is Blues, Rags and Hollers by Koerner, Ray and Glover, which apparently retains the outtakes excavated for a 1995 CD edition.
While we're at it, I'd like to ask our loyal readers: How do you feel about the made-to-order CD trend? The Tartare imprint is the largest CD-R initiative of its kind by a major reissue label for pop/rock releases; Arkiv Music already has a deep catalogue of classical releases "on demand," and recently joined with Sony's Masterworks Broadway to offer a number of theatre-related titles as well. Clearly, many collectors are thrilled to finally have long out-of-print titles commercially available once again. Yet valid concerns have been raised about the quality and longevity of the CD-Rs used, not to mention the generally inferior mastering compared to a full-fledged CD reissue. In addition, the cost is actually higher than many of Collectors' Choice's standard reissues which contain full liner notes and bonus tracks on pressed CDs. Feel free to share your thoughts on Tartare's releases and the made-to-order trend in general; our ears are wide open.

Are they using Taiyo Yuden blanks? If so, I'd be in. Or if I really need it, I'd reburn them onto my own TY blanks.
Galley says
I have the new Michelle Branch EP coming from Warner Brothers. I believe it is a CD-R. I'm not crazy about the idea of CD-Rs, though. At least it was only $5.99.
Dennis says
not too keen on those releases... they could offer them as *.flac download + one could burn the cdrs themselves. plus, if they do such a thing, why not at least include the b-sides of 7"/12" if there were any - just the bare album as cdr, not really interesting.
