30 Years and Still "Searching"

October 5, 2010 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

Those who know Dexys Midnight Runners as the overall-clad Irishmen singing the Celtic-flavored '80s hit "Come On Eileen" might not know there's a bit more to know about this most unusual of bands. (Some folks are on to something about Kevin Rowland and his band of misfits; the first tweet by the incredibly entertaining Discographies Twitter account was a summary of the Dexys catalogue.)

Before releasing Too-Rye-Ay on Mercury and scoring a No. 1 hit with "Eileen," Dexys Midnight Runners was an odd collective of art-soul folks who had their first hit album, 1980's Searching for the Young Soul Rebels, hit the Top 10 in the U.K., thanks mostly to the band's first No. 1 hit, "Geno," a stomping tribute to soul musician Geno Washington. A second Top 10, "There, There, My Dear," would follow, but the band's futures nearly derailed when much of the band quit on Rowland, a known taskmaster who shunned press and required dress codes and fitness training for his band members.

Too-Rye-Ay may have had the better-known hit, but Young Soul Rebels still has its fans, and now a new group can rediscover it with the release of a 30th anniversary edition of the album from EMI. This two-disc set pairs the original album (remastered in 2000) with a bonus disc of non-LP singles and B-sides, a few unreleased demos and the physical CD debut of live recordings for John Peel and Kid Jensen's BBC programs (they were released digitally in 2009).

The set is available October 18; order it here and check the track list after the jump.

Mike Duquette

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.
