La-La Land's Comic-Con Surprise Goes Back to the Final Frontier

July 11, 2011 By Mike Duquette Leave a Comment

La-La Land Records is full of surprises. They teased an amount of titles for the San Diego Comic-Con this year, but announced that four of the potential titles had all fallen victim to various delays. So they announced a three-disc expanded edition of the soundtrack to The Golden Child and, fans assumed, would play it by ear from there.

Then, on Friday afternoon, the label shocked the soundtrack world by announcing there was one title coming for Comic-Con that they hadn't even hinted at. And knowing the audience of the convention, it's one likely to go over like gangbusters: a three-disc compilation of music from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Trekkies have had a lot to celebrate on the catalogue music front in recent years. Film Score Monthly released unlimited deluxe editions of James Horner's scores to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, as well as a 14-disc box set of The Next Generation music from composer Ron Jones. La-La Land's holiday release of the complete score to Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was a hit, as was Varese Sarabande's now out-of-print expansion of Michael Giacchino's score to the successful 2009 reboot of the franchise, released barely a year after the initial soundtrack album had hit stores.

Now, La-La Land adds to the fold Star Trek: The Next Generation Collection Volume 1, a triple-disc set containing nearly four hours of previously unreleased TNG score. While FSM's box was devoted to Jones, this set will focus on the work of composers Dennis McCarthy and Jay Chattaway, with a bonus disc devoted to the work of noted guest composers including Don Davis (The Matrix, Jurassic Park III), John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Predators) and the late Fred Steiner (The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show).

The set, limited to 3,000 units, will first be sold at the label's Comic-Con booth and presentation from July 20-24. It will then go up for sale on the label's website on August 2.

Set thrusters to maximum warp for the track list after the jump!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.
