Joel McNeely's Score to "Squanto" Arrives From Intrada and Disney

August 9, 2011 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Intrada Records sure knows how to keep promises!

We first reported on the film score label’s partnership with Walt Disney Records back on June 27 when the initial release in a series co-branded with Disney was announced.  That first Disney/Intrada release was Michael Giacchino’s Academy Award-winning score to Up (review here), and it was released simultaneously with John Scott’s score to the Touchstone picture Shoot to Kill, also from the Disney vaults under the Intrada Special Collection label.  More announcements were promised for August, and well, the first of those announcements (for the Intrada Special Collection series) has arrived.

Joel McNeely’s score to the 1994 Walt Disney Pictures release Squanto: A Warrior’s Tale is now available for order directly from Intrada in a limited edition of 1,500.  Squanto was director Xavier Koller’s retelling of the 17th century legend of the Native American Tisquantum, better known as Squanto (portrayed by Adam Beach).  Although once kidnapped by the British, Squanto assisted the Pilgrims after their first winter in America, and played a major role in their ongoing survival.  Intrada describes McNeely’s score to his exciting story as “rich” and “evocative” with “haunting sadness…dynamic action…[and] colorful ideas for locale.”  Who could ask for anything more of a film score?  McNeely’s soundtrack has been remastered from the original digital scoring session masters, and John Takis has provided the booklet’s annotation.

There’s still more to come from the Disney/Intrada team, however, and it’s coming soon.  Douglass Fake of Intrada indicates that “one of the heavy hitters lands in just a couple of weeks (August 23) and another one follows just two weeks after that. “  But Disney isn’t the only label teaming with Intrada.  Fake continues, “And courtesy both Paramount and Universal Music Group, fans of those fabulous eighties scores will find one of their oft-requested favorites arriving totally intact with more than a half hour of previously unreleased music, all in spectacular stereo. That one lands on September 6, alongside one of the Disney premieres. Figure August 23 and September 6 will probably be pretty big days! “

Rest assured, The Second Disc will be here to report back on those releases, and we promise some more Disney and Intrada-related surprises before then!  Hit the jump for a pre-order link and complete track listing!

Here's betting that they knock out the disc based release of Randy Newman's Toy Story 3 this go around to get that out of the way.
