Our Memories of Elvis: Presley Classics Expanded by Follow That Dream Label in March

February 14, 2012 By Joe Marchese Leave a Comment

Following December’s release of expanded editions of Elvis Sings The Wonderful World of Christmas, Promised Land and Elvis is Back!, the limited-edition Follow That Dream label has announced another trio of vintage Presley titles due in March.  The On Stage: February, 1970 album (previously twinned with In Person by RCA and Legacy) will be a 2-disc, 7-inch digipak set with a 12-page booklet. In addition to the original album sequence, it will present all of RCA's recordings from three of the shows recorded. The two-volume series Our Memories of Elvis was an early effort to bring unreleased material by The King to light.  Assembled by producer Joan Deary in 1979, the albums bore the signatures of “Colonel” Tom Parker and Elvis’ own father.  Both volumes unearthed undubbed, stripped-down Presley performances.  FTD's 5-inch digipak edition brings together these two albums plus the unreleased third volume, as well as more mixes prepared by Deary and never heard until now.  Finally, 1960 gospel classic His Hand in Mine will receive the FTD treatment on 180-gram vinyl.  Its twenty-eight tracks on four sides include all of the master takes plus numerous alternates.  (Follow That Dream’s expanded CD of His Hand in Mine is still available, and boasts a full 53 tracks related to the album.)

Hit the jump for the full details, including track listing and discography, for this Elvis banquet!

Elvis Presley began a new era of his career when he took the stage at Las Vegas’ International Hotel (later The Las Vegas Hilton, and today in foreclosure under the name The LVH) on July 31, 1969.  Presley’s longtime label RCA was on hand to record a number of the August 1969 sets, intending them for future use.  The first album of this material to emerge was the October 1969 release of the live/studio hybrid double LP set From Memphis to Vegas – From Vegas to Memphis (RCA LSP 6020), the live portion of which was reissued  in November 1970 under the new title Elvis – In Person (RCA LSP 4428).  A February 1970 stand at the International yielded the June release of Elvis – On Stage (RCA LSP 4362), and in 2010, both the On Stage and In Person LPs were combined and expanded into the On Stage – Legacy Edition (RCA/Legacy 88697 63213 2).  But that’s not all.  The Follow That Dream label itself expanded In Person (FTD EPCD150) adding bonus material including the complete August 22, 1969 dinner show.  Now, On Stage follows from FTD, adding the February 18 midnight and dinner shows plus the February 19 dinner show, making the most “complete” version of this classic album yet.  (The original album was derived from performances of February 16-19 and August 25, 1970).

1979’s Our Memories of Elvis anticipated later projects both from Follow That Dream and the RCA label proper in remixing tracks to allow the singer’s voice to shine rather than the layers of background vocals and additional instrumentation.  Yet domestic CD release has long eluded these titles.  The Follow That Dream edition combines the complete Volumes 1 and 2 on the first CD, and premieres the unreleased Volume 3 on the second disc alongside more mixes prepared by producer Joan Deary but never before issued.

Lastly, His Hand in Mine was Presley’s initial long-playing foray into the world of gospel music, and the first of three such albums to see release in his lifetime.  A sign of Presley’s unparalleled popularity, the album went all the way to No. 13 on the pop chart, eventually receiving a Platinum certification.  All of the album’s tracks were recorded in a marathon fourteen-hour session in Nashville on October 30 and 31, 1960; in a feat that would appear remarkable today, the LP was released just days later on November 10!  Hit singles “Surrender” and “Crying in the Chapel” were recorded at the same session but withheld for later release as singles.  Follow That Dream’s 180-gram vinyl edition includes some of the rare material premiered on the label’s 2008 expanded 2-CD edition, including multiple takes allowing insight into Elvis’ recording process.

The track listings and discographical information for each title can be found below!  Expect order links up shortly at ShopElvis.com.

I'm curious about the "Our Memories Of Elvis" set, although it's not yet the sort of automatic purchase that the typical FTD studio titles (with unreleased studio material) always are for me.

So are these coming out as both 7-inch and 5-inch digipak editions? I love the 5-inch editions but always pass on the 7-inch ones since the packaging is ridiculously and unnecessarily over-sized.

You are really missing something by passing up on any 7inch EP sized 2 CD set.
The graphic presentation alone is superb, and on a cost-per-cd basis, they are a better deal than the digipacks.

It is too bad that reissues of other legendary artists do not get the "7 inch" treatment. So much better than low-quality digipacks and their thumb-nail graphics

On Stage is 7-inch and Our Memories is 5-inch. As Kevin said, though, you're really missing out by avoiding FTD's 7-inch releases. FTD's best releases tend to be in the 7-inch, Classic Albums line.
