Philadelphia International Records has turned 40, and you're invited to the party!
Sony's Legacy Recordings thrilled fans earlier this year with the archival release of Golden Gate Groove, a Don Cornelius-hosted concert that brought together many of the label's biggest and brightest stars, from the O'Jays to Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass. The folks across the pond at the Harmless label have already dropped Philadelphia International: The Re-Edits, with 21 tracks on 2 CDs from DJs like Todd Terje (Dee Dee Sharp Gamble's "Easy Money") and Tim McAllister (Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes' "Be For Real"), and next week sees the 4-CD box Philadelphia International Classics: The Tom Moulton Remixes. This treasure trove from the father of the 12-inch mix offers the original seven Moulton tracks from the Philadelphia Classics LP, plus seven rare remixes and sixteen brand-new tracks created by Moulton especially for this set. But these projects are just the tip of the iceberg where the celebration of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's storied label is concerned.
April 9 May 21 is the current date for the Philadelphia International 40th Anniversary Box Set. The title may be simple, but the music certainly isn't. For this 10-CD box set, compilation producer Ralph Tee has created a non-chronological cross-section of the label's releases between 1971 and 1995 placing emphasis on both hits and rarities. Tee, the man behind 1986's 14-LP Philadelphia International box set, has brought under one package over 13-1/2 hours of music from familiar names like Lou Rawls, The O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, The Three Degrees and The Jacksons, as well as cuts from Dick Jensen, Bobby Bennett, Robert Upchurch, Derek & Cyndi, Elliot Hoffman and other names not nearly as recognizable. Also included within the package will be a 60-page full-size booklet containing sleeve notes and track details from Tee, the author of Who's Who In Soul Music) while David Grimes offers the first-ever comprehensive discography of all U.S. releases from Philadelphia International and its related labels like Gamble and Golden Fleece.
Hit the jump for more details on this tremendous project including a full track listing (as sourced from SpinCDs and numerous other sites) with exhaustive discography and a pre-order link!
Though this is certainly the largest appreciation of the Gamble and Huff oeuvre in the CD era, it's not the first box set to cover the label. The 1997 3-CD Legacy box The Philly Sound: Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff and the Story of Brotherly Love (1966-1976) covered the seminal early period of Philadelphia International but also the duo's work shaping the sound at other labels. Hence, the box included cuts from non-PIR artists like Dusty Springfield, Wilson Pickett and Laura Nyro, all of whom were recipients of Gamble and Huff's production largesse. Legacy trumped its own box with the landmark 2008 release Love Train: The Sound of Philadelphia, a four-CD set. Love Train, while still largely drawn from the PIR catalogue, not only spotlighted the work of Gamble and Huff but the other producers, musicians and arrangers based at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound, including Bobby Martin, Norman Harris, Vince Montana, Bobby Eli and most notably the third part of the Mighty Three triangle, Thom Bell. Hence, Bell's productions for The Delfonics, The Stylistics, The Spinners, Dionne Warwick and Deniece Williams finally sat alongside his work at Gamble and Huff's PIR.
The Philadelphia International 40th Anniversary Box Set, naturally, excludes all of the non-PIR material from the previous boxes, although there's still plenty of production and arrangements from Thom Bell and those other hallowed names who worked with Gamble and Huff to create "The Sound of Philadelphia." Harmless is promising a year-long campaign devoted to the label, including a potentially exciting Roots of PIR CD/DVD set exploring Gamble and Huff's work in the late 1960s before they started their seminal label. (Hopefully some all-Thom Bell anthologies will be on the way, too!) The Roots of PIR is currently scheduled for May 21 per Amazon U.K.'s listing but this could change. Kenny Gamble has even been consulting with Harmless on these projects. Watch this space for all of the details as the celebration continues, but in the meantime, you can pre-order The 40th Anniversary Box Set below. It's due for U.K. release on May 21!
And don't forget to sound off below: which neglected PIR titles would you like to see arrive for the 40th anniversary, whether from U.K. licensee Harmless or the U.S.' own Sony/Legacy? Let us know! One thing is for sure: the love train will be making a stop near you during 2012!

All labels are Philadelphia International Records unless otherwise indicated.
All discographical information is to the best of our knowledge only and has not been supplied by the label.
Mike Williams says
This is great news - but what happened to "Philadelphia International: The Roots of PIR" that Harmless had slated for release at the end of January and which has disappeared? Any suggestions of additional material to be released might duplicate what is or isn't being released on that set. But in the absence of this info - would be good to get some of the earlier Intruders albums - when Gamble was not a CBS distributed entity - and which have intermittant and incomplete release - plus content from Huff Puff, North Bay and Neptune that has not been released on CD before. I still argue that the 45 of "Looky, Looky" by the O'Jays had a different and much more punchy mix than the album.
Joe Marchese says
Hey Mike! That "Roots" set is the one I mention in the second-to-last paragraph, and I believe Kenny Gamble has consulted/been interviewed in connection with it. Though it has been delayed, it's my understanding that it is still very much in the pipeline. I'm particularly excited about it, myself! Thanks for your comments!
Mike Williams says
Joe
That mention was a little obtuse and got lost in the mention of the year long campaign. Some Thom Bell album should also be of considerable interest.
Joe Marchese says
No problem, Mike! I've clarified by adding the (tentative) title in there, too!
Joe Marchese says
Hey Mike, "The Roots" is now showing on Amazon UK as a CD/DVD set scheduled for May 21. Of course, these things change, but at least this project is now officially on the radar for release!
Sean says
I'm lukewarm about this. Why not release a complete singles and/or albums collection in chronological order? Will I still be left without some prime-era PIR singles and b-sides after purchasing this mammoth box?
The stewards of the Motown legacy are doing a much better job (the holdup of TCMSv12 notwithstanding).
Mike Williams says
What is the status of TCMSv12?
Sean says
I don't know. I assume at this point they can't get the relevant permission so they are scrapping it. I imagine it's Stevie Wonder who's holding it up. Who else could it be whose rights would have changed in 1972.
Joe Marchese says
Back in May 2011, Hip-o's Harry Weinger told Mike here at The Second Disc that "We’re doing our best. When you cross over into ’72, obtaining licenses for certain tracks is a difficult process. We’re either going to wait it out, or we’ll just stop the series where we were. Which one we’re going to do, I don’t know. At the moment, I’m really, really optimistic and hopeful that the time will come to announce 12A and 12B."
Joe Marchese says
A complete PIR singles collection would sure please a lot of folks around these parts, myself included...here's hoping!
Tony says
Exactly! Some very essential B-sides were missing from this box set. Along with tons of album cuts.
Tony says
Robert Upchurch's "So Glad You're Mine" ??? Should've been included.
Mike Williams says
The argument re Ralph Tee's idiosyncratic assembly of tracks versus the Stax/Motown precedents of chronological releases is probably a moot point as I'm sure that the chance for another boxed set is long gone. I would've argued that the "Roots of PIR" merited at least a 2CD set rather than the 1CD/Kenny Gamble DVD planned.
One other point - I'm finding the mastering on all the Harmless PIR rereleases to lack something in the way of dynamics. I played Vol 6 followed by Leon Huff's 2011 CD release "Groovy People" - a major difference!
Rod Lee-Peace says
Yes there are some tracks are missing, your never gonna please everyone, but it's still an amazing compilation.I'd like to have heard a few unreleased tracks, there was talk of some the Harold melvin tracks being ballads that eventually became dance tracks they would have been nice to hear. But all in all I'm quite pleased with outcome.Well done Ralph Tee & Ian dewhirst.p.s hey Ian where's the vinyl for the 1st comp?! Rod Lee-Peace
Zubb says
I see the UK release date and price. Will this also be released domestically or did I miss it somewhere in the article? What a great set regardless.
Joe Marchese says
The box set will be available via Amazon U.S. and other import-stocking retailers one week following the U.K. release, but there will not be a domestic pressing. (Harmless doesn't hold the rights to the PIR material in the U.S.) Hope this helps.
Zubb says
Yes, that helps. Thanks. I will order it though my local record store.
Robert Lett says
This looks amazing....
David A says
Desperately need to see a CD release of MFSB Universal Love (maybe coupled with 'End of phase 1') - neither of which ever on CD, and Billy Paul Got my head on straight (latter only available as very expenseive French import).
Rod Lee-Peace says
Waiting for my boxset of Philly goodies, long time due, best album of all time to me is "360 degrees Billy Paul . But I do have grievance, why oh why was"Philly re-edits" not put on vinyl it would have been great marketing especially as it was the time of the 12 inch.
Jim Bagley says
Could someone please post the track listing for The Roots Of PIR when it becomes available?
Thanks.
Jim
Joe Marchese says
We'll most certainly be sharing that information as soon as it's available and confirmed!
Jim Bagley says
Thanks Joe. Hoping for Storm Warning by The Volcanos which has never been remastered.

Bit late on all this: Kaleidoscope on CD 3 of the Harmless 40th Anniversary set 'I'm A Changed Person': Don't know that track, but loved 'We're Not Getting Any Younger' by them on TSOP, same sort of vintage. A bit silly and inconsequential perhaps (what it was to be young!) but for some reason it soared out the sound system at a club here in the UK in maybe '75 and set me off frantically trying to find out who and what it was. Think it was played that night on a Philly DJ Promo album with 'Sexy' and whatever else was due out. I tracked down a scuffed 7 inch US version (TSOP 4765 - intriguingly the same serial shown above for 'I'm A Changed Person'!) and the tune had a horrendous toppy mix. I'd love to see it reissued somewhere. Any plans, anyone?

What is the deal with the first three Intruders albums (The Intruders are
Together, Cowboys to Girls & When We Get Married)? That is what I want to see released. No one even mentions those albums. The Intruders need a box set with the singles that were not on an album. Pleas pass this along.
