Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?  Indeed, only The Shadow knows.  And who knows the way to the hearts of film buffs everywhere?  Certainly Intrada knows!  The soundtrack specialist label has just announced its two latest limited editions: a deluxe double-CD expansion of the 1994 film The Shadow including Jerry Goldsmith’s complete score as well as the original Arista LP with songs by Jim Steinman (Bat Out of Hell), plus Craig Safan’s discarded score to Wolfen, the 1981 horror flick from Woodstock director Michael Wadleigh.

1981’s Wolfen is notable for featuring one of the earliest scores from James Horner (Titanic, The Amazing Spider-Man).  But before Horner got the job, a score had been written by Craig Safan (The Last Starfighter, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins).  Although Safan composed an orchestral score described by Intrada as “incredibly intense [and] complex,” it wasn’t gelling with Wadleigh’s film starring Albert Finney, Edward James Olmos and Gregory Hines.  Intrada has already released the final Horner score on CD, and has now turned its attention to a first-time release of Safan’s original.  The new, hour-long soundtrack is presented in stereo from Warner Bros.’ original three-channel stereo masters.  This Intrada Special Collection release will be available as long as “quantities and interest remains,” per the label.

Director Russell Mulcahy’s 1994 film The Shadow was far from the first on-screen excursion for the pulp hero; the earliest movie adaptation was 1937, with Rod LaRocque as Lamont Cranston, a.ka. The Shadow.  In 1994, a pre-30 Rock Alec Baldwin (still in his leading man days!) took on the title role, supported by John Lone, Penelope Ann Miller, Ian McKellen and Peter Boyle.  Already an Academy Award-winning legend, Jerry Goldsmith was brought on to compose the score to the dark adventure film.  He responded by crafting an intricate, thrilling score, which would also prove to be one of the longest of his later period.

The original Arista soundtrack included some 30 minutes of Goldsmith’s music, but Intrada’s new 2-CD release presents over 85 minutes of the original score, including source music and alternate versions.  Themes range from suspense to romance to action, all with the composer’s inimitable touch.   The tracks have been mastered in stereo from Universal’s original 48-track digital session elements as mixed by renowned Doors engineer/producer Bruce Botnick.  But it gets better.  Intrada has also teamed with Sony Music, parent of Arista Records, to present the entire original soundtrack album, too.  So you’ll hear two versions of Taylor Dayne performing Jim Steinman’s dramatic “Original Sin.”  Originally performed by Pandora’s Box and also recorded by Meat Loaf on Welcome to the Neighborhood, the song was written, produced and arranged by Steinman.  Dayne’s recording failed to chart in America, but fared better in the U.K., where it reached No. 63 on the singles chart.  The Shadow version also featured alternate lyrics from Steinman.  Diane Warren’s song “Some Kind of Mystery,” performed by Sinoa, is also included.

Intrada’s 2-CD soundtrack of The Shadow features new liner notes from Jeff Bond and design by Joe Sikoryak.  The original artwork from the 1994 soundtrack has also been included.  The Intrada Special Collection release will be available, like Wolfen, as long as quantities and interest remain!  Both titles can be ordered just below!
