You know it's a big week for soundtracks when multiple specialty labels announce projects in the same week; currently, we have six such titles on the horizon from four labels!
First off, Film Score Monthly has prepped their third-to-last soundtrack set, and it's an oft-requested killer: an expanded edition of John Barry's score to Body Heat (1981). A neo-noir classic, Body Heat - the directorial debut of legendary screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Bodyguard) - stars William Hurt and new starlet Kathleen Turner in a highly eroticized tale of an affair that turns to murder and deceit. The late John Barry turned in one of his most acclaimed scores, looking back to his early, improv-friendly jazz combo days while maintaining a modern, lush, orchestral edge to the score. FSM's definitive presentation of Body Heat includes the full score with alternates and source music, as well as a bonus disc featuring an unreleased edit and mix of the score for album purposes, featuring composer-approved mixes by Dan Wallin, and ten demos of the seductive main theme.
And what's on the way from Intrada, La-La Land and Kritzerland? Hit the jump to find out.
Intrada's two latest releases are a sci-fi cult classic and a fun obscurity from the Disney archives.
First up, it's the return of Strange Invaders! Michael Laughlin's 1983 homage to fifties sci-fi flicks featured an eclectic cast headed up by Lost in Space's June Lockhart and Nurse Ratched herself, Louise Fletcher. John Addison (A Bridge Too Far) was chosen to score the film, and Intrada's world premiere release debuts Addison's entire score on 22 tracks, including cues shortened in the actual movie. This Intrada Special Collection edition is joined by another treasure from the Walt Disney Productions vault: The Last Flight of Noah's Ark! This 1980 adventure directed by Charles Jarrott (1973's Lost Horizon) featured Elliott Gould, Genevieve Bujold and Ricky Schroder (Silver Spoons) as travelers stranded on an island inhabited by pair of Japanese soldiers who still believe World War II is raging! The complete score by Maurice Jarre makes its premiere, plus six bonus tracks! Jarre also contributes a song written with Hal David, "Half of Me," heard in the film. This Special Collection title is, like Strange Invaders, available now.
Our friends at Kritzerland and La-La Land both have Victor Young on the mind. The 22-time (!) Academy Award nominee (Around the World in Eighty Days, The Quiet Man) is on the receiving end of two deluxe editions. Kritzerland has 1955's Strategic Air Command on deck. The Paramount picture was headlined by Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson, but equally important was its use of VistaVision. The widescreen format allowed for stunning aerial footage, scored rousingly by Victor Young. His exciting score is presented from its original mono masters, and five bonus tracks have been appended to the 1,000-unit limited edition. Over at La-La Land, George Stevens' 1952 masterpiece Shane, also from Paramount, also gets revisited. Victor Young's score accompanied actors Alan Ladd, Van Heflin and Jean Arthur in this groundbreaking western. Like Strategic Air Command, Shane is heard in mono. It's supplemented with additional cues from the music-and-effects track. La-La Land is offering Shane in a 2,000-unit limited edition.
Finally, it's up, up and away to Smallville, as LLL teams with Watertower Music, DC Comics and Warner Bros Television for a 2-CD set of music from the long-running television series (2001-2011). Smallville: Deluxe Edition boasts 2 ½ hours of music from all 10 seasons. Disc One replicates the same program featured on a 2010 digital release, but Disc Two premieres more than one hour of previously-unissued music from composers Mark Snow and Louis Febre. Informative liner notes by Brian Satterwhite are featured in the 28-page booklet. Smallville is a limited edition of 3,000 copies.
