If you feel like you've been caught in a crossfire hurricane...you're not alone.
A rolling stone gathers no moss, and neither do The Rolling Stones. After making headlines throughout 2012 for not celebrating their 50th anniversary with a massive tour, retrospective box set or something of the sort, the World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band can't seem to keep out of the headlines lately with a bevy of upcoming projects, including rumored performances in New York and London, two distinct documentaries, another repackaging of 2011's Live in Texas: On Tour 1978, and three limited edition vinyl box sets of live "official bootleg" The Brussels Affair that makes the phrase "super deluxe edition" seem woefully inadequate.
Crossfire Hurricane is the title of the documentary coming from director Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture). With a limited theatrical release planned as well as airings on HBO and the BBC, Crossfire Hurricane promises to trace the Stones' "nearly mythical journey from outsiders to rock and roll royalty, according to the director. But it's not the only documentary on the band's radar. Charlie Is My Darling - Ireland 1965 premieres at the New York Film Festival on September 29, and arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on November 6 in standard editions and...a super deluxe box set!
Charlie is My Darling was the very first documentary to chronicle the Rolling Stones, long before they achieved mythic status. It was filmed on a brief tour of Ireland in the aftermath of breakthrough single "(I Can't Get No Satisfaction)" hitting No. 1. Though it featured professionally filmed concert performances as well as behind-the-scenes segments of the group on the road, Charlie has only trickled out in brief segments over the years, some not properly synched. Directed by Peter Whitehead (Tonite Let's All Make Love in London) and produced by the legendary impresario (and the Stones' manager from 1963 to 1967) Andrew Loog Oldham, the movie includes "candid, off-the-cuff interviews...juxtaposed with revealing, comical scenes of the band goofing on one another as well as unsuspecting outsiders," according to ABKCO. It "offers an unmatched look inside the day-to-day life of the Stones."
Released by ABKCO Films, the new Charlie is My Darling adds previously unseen footage by director Mick Gochanour and producer Robin Klein, the Grammy-Award winning team that brought the classic The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus film to the screen in 1996. Following the premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 29 and an encore screening on October 3 at the Walter Reade Theatre, the documentary will be broadcast on television and issued on DVD, BD and a special DVD/BD super deluxe box. The latter will include the film on both DVD and BD, plus two CDs (Live in England 1965 and the film soundtrack) and a vinyl LP. You can pre-order all versions here!
After the jump: the Rolling Stones revisit The Brussels Affair, but it's not what you might be expecting! Plus: the complete track listing to the Charlie is My Darling box set!
The Stones may have wanted to "paint it black," but they're seeing green with three limited edition box sets based around last year's initial release of the digital Stones Archive: The Brussels Affair. The epic October 1973 concert recorded at the Forest National in Belgium had circulated for years on bootleg before the Stones afforded it a commercial release from the original multi-track masters recorded by Andy Johns on the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio of the two Brussels performances only. (Bootlegs had substituted songs from other venues.) Bob Clearmountain created for the final mix. Highlights of its fifteen tracks include an 11-minute version of "You Can't Always Get What You Want," a 13-minute "Midnight Rambler" and a closing take on "Street Fighting Man." Along the way you'll also hear "Angie," "Brown Sugar," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Tumbling Dice" and "Gimme Shelter."
Since the initial Archive releases were announced, fans have clamored for physical editions. The band has responded, but not with the expected CD editions, or even standard vinyl or a high-definition format. Instead, it will arrive in vinyl-only Collector's, Platinum and Art Editions, limited to 1,727, 173 and 73 copies, respectively. All three versions are due for release on November 16, and all three will contain:
- the concert on 180-gram vinyl LPs,
- a book written by Nick Kent and hand-signed by Mick Jagger,
- another book of rare concert photos,
- a lithograph; and
- a watch with the Stones' famous "Tongue and Lips" logo.
The Platinum Edition adds Jagger's signature on the lithograph, too, and the ultra-rare Art Edition includes a silver gelatin print signed by tour photographer Michael Putland.
How much filthy lucre will it cost you to take one of these sets home? The "comparably-fewer-frills" Collector's Edition will set you back $750.00. The Platinum Edition retails for $1,250.00 and the Art Edition for $1,500.00. For those interested, all three can be purchased right here at the Rolling Stones' official online store.
Lastly (for now!), Eagle Rock Entertainment joins once more with the band for the vinyl debut of Some Girls: Live in Texas '78, filmed on July 18, 1978 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. This concert film was originally released in 2011 in a variety of formats: DVD, DVD/CD, Blu-ray, and Blu-ray/CD. (Whew!) Now, vinyl can be added to the list. Two 180g vinyl records will contain the concert's audio, and the set also comes with the CD (of the same content) and the DVD of the performance. It's packaged in a three-panel gatefold, and is due on September 11 stateside. This might be a reasonable option for those who didn't pick up one of the other versions last year, or for those who'd like a new addition to a Stones vinyl library.

Love The Stones, but I'll have to pass on these; they're just too high-priced.
The term 'manufactured obsolescence' comes into the picture here.
If these weren't either of the above, I'd be more interested.
Bill Janowski says
'Some Girls Live' might not be a bad bet, IF it's not too expensive .
plasket says
So they're pretty much releasing every Stones-related film except the one everyone wants. (Where are they holding the yearly screenings, anyway? And what happens when Robert Frank dies? He's almost 90... anyone bothering to preserve/restore it?)
Shaun says
So... those concert release downloads are only lossy mp3 in the U.S., and then when they finally release them in a physical format there's no CD (which, y'know, most of us would be able to actually use), but instead some bullshit limited "collector's edition" releases at insane prices. On vinyl.
F*ck the Stones.

Words fail me....

What Shaun says!
JoeF says
Relax. These are not for casual--or even most rabid Stones fans. These high-priced deluxe editions are souvenirs -party favors--for the Stones fellow jet-set of globe-trotting millionaires and tax exiles. They don't contain anything essential. Besides most of this stuff--and a lot more like it--will become available in the months ahead as they kick into overdrive the celebration of their 50th anniversary, which most Stones scholars consider to be 2013 anyway.
Bill janowski says
So the Stones need to 'cash-grab' their buddies with these 'party favors'?!? Ridiculous. LOL!!
Ed Silverman says
The prices for the Brussels Affair sets are completely out of touch. I don't begrudge those who can afford to buy any of these, but for Stones and their management are insulting most fans. At least until they prove otherwise and release more affordable versions (and perhaps something on CD, too).
Bill Janowski says
If what JoeF said actually happens, there's really no need to get any of their expensive 'party favors'...I'd wait.
Richard Iozia says
How many Charlie is my Darling (super deluxe box set) s are being produced?
