The Sinatra centennial celebration is picking up steam this fall with the release of a new 4-CD box set from Legacy Recordings. On November 20, the label will release Frank Sinatra: A Voice on Air (1935-1955), the first comprehensive, fully authorized collection of Sinatra's historic radio performances. Over 100 tracks have been meticulously restored from the original recording masters for what's being billed as "unprecedented high fidelity sound."
A Voice on Air captures Sinatra during the first twenty years of his legendary career, from his first radio performance in 1935 (singing "S-H-I-N-E" with the Hoboken Four) to his last weekly series in 1955 (The Frank Sinatra Show, which featured Sinatra backed by an in-studio quintet). The set's producers - Charles L. Granata, Didier C. Deutsch, Michael Feinstein and Andreas Meyer - have drawn upon their own Sinatra broadcast transcription collections as well as the archives of The Library of Congress, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, the Paley Center for Media, the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative archive and The University of Colorado's Glenn Miller Archive to create this set. Three-time Grammy-winning engineer Meyer and producer Granata have restored and remastered every track from the original glass and aluminum radio transcription discs and magnetic tape masters.
Most tantalizingly for collectors, A Voice on Air includes dozens of songs that were never officially recorded by the future Chairman of the Board, and dozens of unusual (and otherwise unrecorded) arrangements of favorite melodies. Highlights from the greatest writers of the American Songbook include renditions of Cole Porter's "Don't Fence Me In," Frank Loesser's "I Wish I Didn't Love You So," Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin's "Long Ago and Far Away," Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen's "Aren't You Glad You're You" and Richard Whiting, Leo Robin and Newell Chase's "My Ideal."
Duets were a core part of the Sinatra radio repertoire, as well. Listeners will hear tracks with Nat "King" Cole ("Exactly Like You"), Benny Goodman ("I Only Have Eyes for You"), Peggy Lee ("You Brought A New Kind of Love to Me"), Dorothy Kirsten ("A Fine Romance"), Doris Day ("Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and "There's No Business Like Show Business" and even Milton Berle ("It's De-Lovely") - as well as songwriters Irving Berlin ("Alexander's Ragtime Band"), Johnny Mercer ("Ac-Cen-Tchu-Ate the Positive") and even Louisiana Governor Jimmy Davis ("You Are My Sunshine"). Also included on this set are original program openings, closings, announcements and commercials. Twelve surprise bonus tracks round out this first-of-its-kind box set.
Included in the accompanying 60-page book are an introductory essay by renowned singer, pianist, archivist and producer Michael Feinstein; a remembrance by Frank's daughter Nancy Sinatra, and a detailed historical essay by producer Charles L. Granata. The package was designed by Maria Marulanda, whose credits include the 2007 Columbia/Legacy box set Frank Sinatra: A Voice in Time which serves as a companion to this release.
And that's not all. Legacy Recordings has also partnered with The Smithsonian Institution to create a single CD consisting of an additional 26 rare, previously unreleased radio recordings not available on the box set to be offered exclusively at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and through their website. Visit http://www.smithsonianmag.com/sinatra/ for information regarding this special release. (Full details, including the track listing, will be revealed at a later date.)

Far better than every one of those "Best of" Compilations with one unique track put out by the "family". Sinatra releases should be done by fans like Granata
Rick says
Great news...though I'm disappointed that the collection did not include two incredible renditions, "Out of Nowhere" and "Just One of those Things" from the Perfectly Frank sessions. I personally prefer Sinatra's 1950s radio efforts vs 1940s. If this 4-CD collection is a hit, maybe a second assembly of radio work will be issued as well. I gotta think there's 200-400 radio recordings that exist.

Any Frank Sinatra things like this are SO welcome!
I saw him 19 times over the years! A major influence on me!
I hope Frank realized how much he was loved by his fans and admirers!
There will never be another Frank Sinatra!

No Woody Woodpecker Theme?
