Part shoegaze, part Britpop, Lush were one of the most interesting bands to come out of England in the 1990s--and with a reunion imminent, they've readied the definitive box set of their discography.
The five-disc Chorus, available December 4, gathers all of Lush's studio output in one set. The EP collection Gala (1990); studio albums Spooky (1992), Split (1994) and Lovelife (1996); and B-sides compilation Topolino (1996) will all be appended with additional material, including 16 unreleased tracks and countless uncollected rarities. The hardbound book package is designed by Chris Bigg, who helped design many of the band's early sleeves.
Formed by school friends and dual vocalists/guitarists Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson, Lush, rounded out by bassist Phil King and drummer Chris Acland, gained early notoriety among the British music press for their presence in the nascent shoegaze scene, heavy on guitar feedback and indistinct vocals. While the quartet racked up positive reviews in England, appearing at the Glastonbury Festival in 1990, songs like "Sweetness and Light" and "De-Luxe" hit the upper reaches of Billboard's Modern Rock chart in America, and 1992's Spooky crossed over into the U.K. Top 10.
Lush would eventually change their sound to align with the nascent Britpop movement of the mid-'90s, which also sold well, but the band was consistently pressured into pursuing success in America, something which never quite came thanks to odd live billings with incongruous groups like the Gin Blossoms. Tragedy struck in late 1996 when Acland hung himself; the group formally disbanded two years later.
In 2016, Lush (with Acland's friend, Elastica drummer Justin Welch, sitting behind the drum kit) will play two British dates in May, with a September date in New York just announced and additional dates to follow, possibly on both sides of the Atlantic. Chorus makes the perfect crash course

Keith says
YES! I have been waiting for a remaster/reissue of Lush's recordings for years, having missed out on a lot of the recordings on this collection. I really like Lush, who were truly awesome-one of the best bands from the U.K back in the day-who got criminally ignored here in the States. I hope this box set will be easy to find as it looks like it's gonna be a limited edition type release and will probably be an import from the U.K. Nevertheless, if I do get it it will definitely make this Lush fan happy!
Tanner the 11-year-old says
I'm glad this is coming out, but the sequencing is a little puzzling.
