A classic '50s score and four popular '90s soundtracks from three beloved composers make up La-La Land Records' exciting-as-always Black Friday announcements.
This year, the label has prepped expanded reissues of Dimitri Tiomkin's Giant (1956), 25th anniversary editions of John Williams' Home Alone and John Barry'sDances with Wolves (both 1990) and two scores by the late James Horner: 1994's The Pagemaster and 1995's Braveheart. All five limited edition CD sets will be available to order on Tuesday, December 1.
With Christmas just around the corner, it's as appropriate as always to start with Home Alone. Written by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus, with a stellar cast that included newcomer Macaulay Culkin as the resourceful Kevin McCallister and Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern as the burglars he protects his house from on Christmas Eve, Home Alone became more than just a Christmas classic, topping the American box-office for 12 weeks straight and staying in the Top 10 through the following spring. It's still one of the top-grossing comedies of all time, with limited-engagement screenings (through both Fathom Events and special concert hall viewings through Film Concerts Live with the score performed live to picture) commemorating the quarter-century mark of the film. Williams' heartwarming score, anchored by two songs with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse (the Oscar-nominated "Somewhere in My Memory" and "Star of Bethlehem"), perfectly captures the tone of the film, at times playful and haunting, with a generous amount of unique textures (including electronic instruments) for good measure.
Home Alone was a highlight of La-La Land's slate the year The Second Disc started in 2010, when a generous single-disc presentation added the complete score and other unreleased treasures. With producers Nick Redman and Mike Matessino at the helm once more, the score has been remastered from newly uncovered 2" scoring masters at 24-bit/96K high resolution, sounding better than ever as well as uncovering additional unreleased material (namely striking film mixes of the church choir material and two unreleased tracks from those same sessions). A second disc adds the original CBS Records soundtrack album, newly restored, remastered and augmented with several bonus cuts, including Chuck Berry's "Run, Rudolph, Run" and Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (two modern holiday classics heard in the film) as well as two unreleased tracks by Southside Johnny Lyon (a rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and the famous "Rock and Roll Riff" that accompanies Kevin's joyous discovery that "[he] made [his] family disappear"). Home Alone is limited to 5,000 copies for the holidays.
Macaulay Culkin was also the star of 1994's The Pagemaster, a quirky live action/animated adventure film about a boy transported into a fantasy world of books. Released two years after filming was completed, The Pagemaster was not a commercial success, but praise is due to James Horner's typically exciting fantasy score. The original soundtrack album is slightly expanded with two unreleased cues and a pair of alternates; Redman and Matessino again work their restoration magic here. The Pagemaster is limited to 2,000 copies.
Horner was also behind the Oscar-nominated score to Mel Gibson's 1995 passion project Braveheart. Based on the life of William Wallace, a 13th century warrior attempting to lead Scotland to independence from England, Braveheart would take home five Academy Awards, including two for Gibson (Best Picture, Best Director). Horner, who'd collaborated with Gibson for Man Without a Face in 1993, turned in an evocative, Scottish-flavored score successful enough to get two separate soundtrack releases! La-La Land's Braveheart, produced by Dan Goldwasser and Mike Matessino (who also mastered) and featuring new notes from Jeff Bond with new commentary from Gibson, is limited to 3,000 copies and dedicated to the enduring memory of Horner.
Another '90s epic is greatly expanded by La-La Land Records in this batch: John Barry's Oscar-winning soundtrack to Dances with Wolves. Like Braveheart, Dances with Wolves was another passion-fueled epic by a bankable star-turned-director (Kevin Costner), about a Civil War lieutenant and his dealings with a Lakota Indian tribe on the frontier. It was the epic of 1990, becoming the first Western in nearly 60 years to win an Oscar for Best Picture (Costner also took home a trophy for Best Director). Barry's soundtrack, released by Epic Records upon released and expanded by Legacy Recordings in 2004, is brilliantly expanded to two discs, with a significant amount of alternates and bonus material. Didier C. Deutsch and Mark Wilder (who also mastered) produce this set, limited to 5,000 copies.
La-La Land's slate closes with a final epic release--one from nearly 60 years ago: Dimitri Tiomkin's score to the film Giant. Based on Edna Ferber's novel about a ranching family in Texas, Giant boasted an all-star cast that included Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and--in his third and final film role--James Dean. (Both Dean and Hudson were nominated for Oscars; of ten categories, Giant just won once, for Best Director.) Tiomkin's dramatic score - produced, edited and assembled here by Neil S. Bulk with mastering by Doug Schwartz (and additional engineering by the apparently sleepless Matessino) - is presented from a combination of surviving film elements and alternates with additional, newly-transferred material and album masters, offering the definitive take on this dramatic, powerful score. Giant is limited to 3,000 units.
All titles announced will go on sale at 12 p.m. PST (that's 3 p.m. at Second Disc HQ!) at La-La Land on Tuesday, December 1. Full track lists are below, and links will be updated as they go live!

I ordered the new "Home Alone" CD - haven't opened it yet - but it mentions nothing on the back tray card about a second disc.
What happened ??
Robert says
The new Home Alone disc has the credits for the second cd on the inside of the inlay card.
