It seems like no one's safe from the vinyl bug--not even soundtrack giant Intrada, who this week announced vinyl versions of two of their best action scores: Laurence Rosenthal'sClash of the Titans and Vince DiCola's Rocky IV.
Desmond Davis' Greek myth epic Clash of the Titans was part Hollywood throwback, part modern action film for 1981. Harry Hamlin, as Perseus (the son of the god Zeus, as portrayed by Laurence Olivier), fights a brilliant array of monsters created by stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen (his final film work) to save the beautiful but strong-willed Andromeda (Juli Bowker). Rosenthal's sweeping score, greatly expanded from its original Columbia Records presentation by Intrada as a double-CD set in 2010, is now pressed on 180-gram vinyl for the discerning soundtrack fan with a turntable. (This release lacks the seven bonus tracks, mainly alternates and LP versions, of the 2CD set.)
"This time, it's war!" Even Sylvester Stallone didn't seem sure of how to continue the Rocky series after two powerhouse sequels to the Oscar-winning 1976 film. But, drawing heavily on international politics as Rocky Balboa gives up his heavyweight title to fight the monstrous Soviet Ivan Drago (Dolph Lungren) in Moscow and avenge the death of his foe-turned friend Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), Rocky IV in fact turned out to be the most profitable of the series. It also marked a radical musical departure, as Bill Conti's commitment to The Karate Kid led to a heart-pounding electronic score by Vince DiCola, still a year away from his powerhouse work on The Transformers: The Movie. Drawing on Conti's classic "Gonna Fly Now" and bringing his own distinctive heroic motifs (including the pulsing "Training Montage"), the score to Rocky IV proved to be a knockout, as well. Just over 30 years after its theatrical release, six years after Intrada premiered the score on CD and mere months after the critically acclaimed Creed ably continued the long-running franchise with Michael B. Jordan as the illegitimate son of Apollo (and an Oscar-nominated Stallone as a reluctant Balboa fighting for his life as he trains his friend's son), Rocky IV is pressed on 180-gram vinyl for the first time ever.
Both titles are available to order from Intrada.
