With this year's Record Store Day on Saturday, April 16 rapidly approaching, it's time to highlight the releases from Walt Disney Records. The label is offering up three selections on vinyl for the event and they range from the earliest days of the Walt Disney Company right up to its modern acquisitions.
The first up is a new vinyl compilation entitled Disney Favorite Songs. This 8-song LP features songs from the classic and modern Disney repertoire ranging from "When You Wish Upon A Star" from Pinocchio to "Let It Go" from Frozen. The cover artwork featuring Mickey Mouse adorning the LP is the same as on the new Crosley record player being released this Record Store Day. Following in the footsteps of past Crosley pop-culture themed players like one with Peanuts artwork, the turntable features built-in speakers and ability to play 33s, 45s and 78s.
Next up is a a 10-inch, 33-1/3 LP featuring the complete soundtracks to two of Disney's Silly Symphonies: The Skeleton Dance and The Three Little Pigs. The LP has only been available previously to those who pre-ordered the great Silly Symphonies Collection box set at last year's D23 Expo in California or at Disney Music Emporium. Now it is being a made available to a wider audience and can serve as a sampler as to what is included in the box set.
The third RSD selection is from the world of Star Wars, which Disney of course bought from George Lucas several years ago. The 10-inch, 33-1/3 picture LP has two tracks from John Williams' Academy Award-nominated score to the record-breaking 2015 triumph Star Wars: The Force Awakens: "March of the Resistance" and "Rey's Theme." The limited edition LP features artwork of the Millennium Falcon taken from the film. (Note that Disney also has a picture disc of the complete Force Awakens soundtrack, which will be made available to general retail in May.)
In other Disney vinyl news, Collector's Choice Vinyl has three exclusive offerings which may be of interest to Disney music enthusiasts. (These are available only through the Collector's Choice Vinyl website and Disney theme parks.) The first two are reissues of Alice in Wonderland and Lady and the Tramp from the Magic Mirror series. The Mirror albums were released by Disneyland Records in the 1960s and featured a retelling of their animated films together with songs from the film. Each LP also included an illustrated 12" x 12" read-along storybook. These new 120-gram reissues replicate the original designs and also include the storybooks.
The other exclusive is a repressing of the double-LP picture disc edition of Danny Elfman's score to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. This edition was previously only available at Hot Topic stores and was out-of-print. Each side in the LP features artwork from the film.
We've got the tracklistings for you to review below. The Record Store Day Releases will be available at participating stores on March 16, 2016. The other are available now from ccvinyl.com or Disney theme parks.
