A new box set from Rhino Records celebrates the life and work of the late metal legend Ronnie James Dio with the band that bore his last name.
A Decade of Dio 1983-1993 collects all six studio albums released by Warner Bros. and Reprise in the first decade of the band Dio's soaring career. Formed by Ronnie James Dio and drummer Vinny Appice after their split from Black Sabbath in 1982, the group first gained prominence with the title track of debut Holy Diver, a staple of MTV and a recurring metal cult classic.
Dio's distinctive vocals were the centerpiece of the band, which featured a somewhat revolving group of members in its day. Holy Diver was recorded as a quartet with Dio, Appice, guitarist Vivian Campbell and bassist Jimmy Bain. Keyboardist Claude Schnell joined for The Last in Line and Sacred Heart; during the Sacred Heart Tour, Campbell left (he'd later join Whitesnake) and was replaced by Craig Goldy for the fourth album, Dream Evil.
Dio cleaned house entirely for 1990's Lock Up the Wolves, recruiting guitarist Rowan Robertson, bassist Teddy Cook, keyboardist Jens Johansson and drummer Simon Wright. Dio and Appice would rejoin Black Sabbath for the one-off Dehumanizer in 1992, after which the duo again rebuilt Dio around themselves, guitarist Tracy G, and bassist Jeff Pilson for their final Reprise-era album, Strange Highways, in 1993. Dio would release albums independently through the '90s and '00s with various new and old members; Goldy and Wright were in the band when Dio succumbed to stomach cancer in 2010.
A Decade of Dio, available July 22, newly remasters all the Warner-era material (the latter two albums receiving their first digital remaster) on six CDs with new box artwork by Marc Sasso, who designed several covers and tributes for Dio. A vinyl version, to be released October 4, comes with a bonus 7" single collecting two more studio tracks: an early version of Sacred Heart's "Evil Eyes" as heard on the "Holy Diver" single, and "Time to Burn," the sole studio track from the live mini-album Intermission in 1986.
