Back in May we told you about Pink Floyd's vinyl reissue campaign for this year. At the time, there was no word on any further CD reissues. But all that changed this morning when word came out about what may be the most expansive Pink Floyd project yet: the 27-disc The Early Years 1965-1972. Due to be released on November 11 from Pink Floyd Records/Sony, the set contains 6 CD/DVD or Blu-ray book-style packages (which will be released separately) and a 7th "Extra" CD/DVD or Blu-ray package exclusive to the box. A 2-CD highlight set The Early Years - CRE/ATION will also be available the same day.
The box contains 130 audio tracks running over 12 hours, and over 15 hours of video. There are 20 unreleased songs including 7 hours of unreleased live material. Five 7" replica vinyl singles are also included.
The set promises to trace Pink Floyd's journey from its founding in 1965 through their early singles and first seven studio albums (plus soundtracks) up until The Dark Side of The Moon. This package seems to be similar in content to the Immersion box sets the band released for three of their albums (The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall) but this time covering a whole series of albums.
You can access the full track listing here, from Pink Floyd's official website. We've got the full press release below with more details if you'd like to learn more, plus pre-order links!

Box Set overview:
1965-1967 CAMBRIDGE ST/ATION
Covering Syd Barrett's time with the band, from the pre-EMI demos, through the non-album hit singles and related tracks, the first volume also features previously unreleased tracks like Vegetable Man and In The Beechwoods (newly mixed), plus BBC session recordings. Pink Floyd have also acquired the tapes of an unreleased 1967 concert in Stockholm.
The DVD/Blu-ray includes historic TV performances plus some of Pink Floyd's own film material.
1968 GERMIN/ATION
This volume explores the time immediately after Syd Barrett's departure, when Pink Floyd were still writing singles and at the same time developing their own unique, more instrumentally-based style. There are non-album single releases, plus a recently discovered session at Capitol Records studios in Los Angeles, additional BBC sessions and other tracks.
The DVD/Blu-ray includes the recently restored promo clip of Point Me At The Sky, some international TV performances and a selection of song material from other television shows.
1969 DRAMATIS/ATION
In 1969 Pink Floyd unveiled their 2-part conceptual live production of 'The Man' and 'The Journey', covering a 24-hour period of dreaming, waking and other activities. Although never released in that form, some of the songs were used on the 'More' soundtrack and the 'Ummagumma' album. This volume refers back to 'The Man' and 'The Journey' tour with live performances in Amsterdam and for the BBC in London, but also includes the bonus tracks from the 'More' soundtrack that were used in the film but not on record, plus non-album tracks like the early version of Embryo from the Harvest sampler 'Picnic'.
Video material includes 20 minutes of 'The Man'/'The Journey' rehearsal at the Royal Festival Hall, directed by Anthony Stern, including Afternoon (Biding My Time), The Beginning (Green Is The Colour), Cymbaline, Beset By Creatures Of The Deep and The End Of The Beginning (the last part of A Saucerful Of Secrets), plus other live performance footage from that year.
1970 DEVI/ATION
At the end of 1969 and in the early part of 1970, Pink Floyd recorded and mixed their contribution to Michelangelo Antonioni's alternative view of US society, 'Zabriskie Point'. Three songs were released on the soundtrack album, and an additional four tracks were added in the expanded CD edition in 1997. Never released on one Pink Floyd disc, this volume compiles remixed and updated versions of the 'Zabriskie Point' audio material.
In the same year, Pink Floyd scored their first UK Number One album with 'Atom Heart Mother', a collaboration with Ron Geesin. The audio includes the first performance for the BBC, featuring an orchestra and choir, as well as, on DVD, the original Quad mix.
The video material includes a full hour of Pink Floyd performing live at San Francisco cable TV station KQED plus extracts from historic performances of 'Atom Heart Mother', and material from French TV coverage of the St. Tropez festival in Southern France.
1971 REVERBER/ATION
In 1971 Pink Floyd recorded the 'Meddle' album, containing the track 'Echoes, which took up the entire side of the LP and is regarded by many as laying the groundwork for 'The Dark Side Of The Moon', and, as such, is an important part of the Pink Floyd canon.
This package includes part of the original demos, when the project gestated from 'Nothing' to 'Return Of The Son Of Nothing', as well as a contemporary BBC session recording.
Audio-visual material includes the original unreleased Quad mix of 'Echoes' as well as material of live band performances in 1971, including songs performed with Roland Petit and his Marseille ballet company.
1972 OBFUSC/ATION
In 1972 Pink Floyd travelled to Hérouville, north of Paris, to record at Strawberry Studios which is based in the town's Chateau. In a remarkable two weeks, they wrote and recorded one of their most cohesive albums, 'Obscured By Clouds', the soundtrack to Barbet Schroeder's 'La Vallée'.
1972 saw the release of 'Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii', a film of the band performing without an audience in the historic Roman amphitheatre of Pompeii, directed by Adrian Maben. The video material includes the performances from the 'Live At Pompeii' film, edited to new 5.1 audio mixes, plus material from contemporary French TV as well as performances from Brighton Dome in June, 1972 and further performances with the Roland Petit ballet company.

Jon Land says
Jesus, this is amazing, but $700??? Is that right?
John says
530 euros on Amazon.de, at least with free shipping...
Jon Land says
That makes more sense as a list price.
Philip Cohen says
But look at Amazon's Uk website. A strong dollar and the subtraction of UK VAT taxes produce an approximate $460 price....even after shipping. Amazon.co.uk has a fixed per-album shipping charge, whether the album is a 1-CD set or a huge 27-disc boxed set. No need to pay $700.
Amazon's British website enabled me to buy The Rolling Stones' "Totally Stripped" CD + 4-Bluray box for $45 (even after shipping) versus its $109 price on Amazon's American website. Be a careful shopper, and good prices can be found.
Philip Cohen says
The initial announcement on Pink Floyd's website (which was taken down after one day) promised several things that the group ultimately decided not to include, specifically 5.1 surround mixes of "Meddle" & "Obscured By Clouds". To include the new stereo mix of "Obscured By Clouds" but not the 5.1 mix is absurd. presumably, the 5.1 mixes are being held back for some future "Immersion" box. Also, the initial announcement promised two albums in quadraphonic (4.0) sound. Instead, we get "Atom Heart Mother" and only the "Side Two" of "Meddle".
While the boxed set clears the vaults of radio & T.V. broadcast materials from 1967-72, it is less than thorough with EMI vault materials. Note: there is no studio or live vault materials from "Ummagumma" in this set. Notably absent: the group's 1969 re-arrangement of "Interstellar Overdrive" recorded during the two concerts taped for "Ummagumma", but ultimately not released.
Am I buying this boxed set? Yes?, but the decision to omit those 5.1 mixes is VERY disappointing. I'm hoping that David, Nick & Roger may yet change their minds.
Phil Educate says
The decision to include a vastly incomplete set of the studio rarities on the "abbreviated" two disc set, is shameful. We can pay $16 for only about a third of the rarities (mixed in with a bunch of other stuff that is widely available), or else pay $700 for the full set of those 20 or so rarities, provided amidst hours and hours of audio and video content the average Floyd fan will not want ( and cannot afford). How about a "medium cost" version which contains two or three CDs containing just the studio audio rarities?
Dale Haskell says
Still no "Scream Thy Last Scream?" Maybe for for a few hundred more Euros they'll include it.
Yes folks, behold the the king of all reissue scams...Pink Floyd. I think I'll stick with my Syd Barrett box set.
Eddie says
How wrong can you be?
Look at the track list more carefully.
"Scream Thy Last Scream" is there, not just once, but twice: studio in a 2010 mix and live from Stockholm '67
I think you should apologize to the Floyd!
Philip Cohen says
Make that THREE times: the EMI version, a live version and a BBC version. Incidentally, the vocal on the EMI version is by drummer Nick Mason.
Eddie says
Yes!
Wash your mouth out, Dale 'i have no credibility' Haskell!
