Your weekend will be above average should you pick up the new expanded editions of all three albums by Canadian instrumental rock band Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.
The Toronto-based trio--drummer Don Pyle, guitarist Brian Connelly and bassist Reid Diamond--formed out of punk outfit Crash Kills Five in 1984. Their catchy instrumentals and unique DIY-style releases (one EP was sold on a package of Jiffy Pop) guaranteed them cult favorite status, but it was "Having An Average Weekend," the closing track of 1988's Savvy Show Stoppers (an album of single and EP sides), that granted them larger fame after it was used as the theme song to the sketch comedy series The Kids in the Hall (named after the troupe of the same name).
While the group were of a few minds about the surf-rock label that "Average Weekend" earned them--a track on their Steve Albini-engineered third album Sport Fishin': The Lure of the Bait, The Luck of the Hook (1993) was named "We're Not a Fucking Surf Band," and this year's Record Store Day-exclusive vinyl box set was named Oh, I Guess We Were a Fucking Surf Band After All--they were still quite beloved in their native country, even snagging a Juno Award in 1992 for Instrumental Artist of the Year in 1992.
Shadowy Men split up in 1996, after which Pyle, Diamond and Dallas Good of The Sadies formed Phono-Comb, briefly backing up Half Japanese vocalist Jad Fair. Diamond died of cancer in 2001, but Pyle, Connelly and Good joined forces in 2012 for live dates around Canada.
Individual CD and vinyl reissues of the group's three albums--Savvy Show Stoppers, Dim the Lights, Chill the Ham (1991) and Sport Fishin'--are available now. The LPs feature the bonus tracks, all previously available on a bonus disc in Oh, I Guess We Were a Fucking Surf Band After All, as a digital download.
