Stardog Champions: Mother Love Bone Box Due This Fall

We recently reported Universal's new reissue of Seattle grunge outfit Temple of the Dog, a supergroup featuring members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden paying tribute to Mother Love Bone. This fall, the complete output of that band will be compiled into a box set as well.

On Earth As It Is: The Complete Works is the definitive collection from the first of Seattle's burgeoning late '80s/early '90s rock scene to secure a major label deal. The members of the quintet all kicked around said scene for much of the late '80s, with guitarists Bruce Fairweather and Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament coming from proto-grunge group Green River, drummer Greg Gilmore playing in punk outfits 10 Minute Warning (where he played alongside Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan) and Skin Yard (where he replaced future Soundgarden/Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron), and frontman Andrew Wood hailing from Malfunkshun, one of the scene's leading groups.

Bolstered by Wood's larger-than-life stage presence (deemed "the only stand-up comedian frontman in Seattle" by local engineer Jack Endino) and his scintillating lyrical approach, Mother Love Bone helped break open the floodgates of Northwestern rock music when they signed to PolyGram Records in 1989. Unfortunately, just before the planned spring release of their debut album Apple, Wood overdosed on heroin and passed away days later, at the too-young age of 24.

Both Apple and its preceding EP Shine were compiled into a self-titled compilation in 1992; by that time, Gossard and Ament had found success in Pearl Jam and formed the one-off Temple of the Dog with Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready and Soundgarden frontman and drummer Chris Cornell (Wood's former roommate) and Matt Cameron, whose "Reach Down" and "Say Hello 2 Heaven" were directly inspired by Wood's passing.

On Earth As It Is, available in vinyl or CD versions and released through Pearl Jam's Monkeywrench label, features new remasters of Apple and Shine by Ed Brooks at RFI Mastering. The 12" x 12" vinyl packages features both LPs in a slipcase designed after a wall mural painted by Ament, along with a 24-page book of lyrics, credits and photos; additional photo prints, stencils, a zine and a poster. (Random orders from Pearl Jam's official shop will include vintage holiday greeting cards signed by the band, found in the band's archives.

A 3CD/1DVD edition includes a further 23 rare and unreleased tracks, including demos, vinyl-only gems and a live performance of "Stardog Champion" by Pearl Jam and Chris Cornell at the PJ20 Tour kickoff in 2011. The DVD is the first release of documentary VHS The Love Bone Earth Affair in a digital format, alongside three bonus videos and live cuts.

Both boxes are due out November 4. Full details and order links for the CD version are just below!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.
