With Halloween just around the corner, Varese Sarabande Records has scared up a pair of fantastic horror soundtrack reissues for its CD Club!
One of the label's most famous soundtrack releases comes back for more! Jerry Goldsmith's score to The Omen gets a brand-new overhaul for its 40th anniversary. Richard Donner's classic thriller stars Gregory Peck as an ambassador to England who realizes only too late that his son Damien--an orphan adopted in secret when his own child was stillborn--is actually the Antichrist. Goldsmith's iconic score, with its unforgettable choral theme "Ave Satani," earned the venerable composer the only Oscar of his storied career!
First released by Varese for the film's 25th anniversary in 2001, this remastered 40th anniversary presentation includes six previously unreleased score cues plus a bonus suite of themes recorded at the third Fimucité film score festival in 2009.
Over 20 years after The Omen, horror master Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson joined forces for a new kind of slasher film: 1996's Scream. This self-aware scarefest was a runaway hit, and 1997 saw the release of the first of three sequels. This time, survivor Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell)'s idyllic college life is upended when a film about the original murders inspires a copycat killer on her campus. Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Jamie Kennedy and Liev Schrieber reprise their roles from the original film, and Marco Beltrami returns to score the film.
While Beltrami's stellar work was somewhat overshadowed in post-production (when tracked music from Hans Zimmer's Broken Arrow score and a last-minute choral piece by Danny Elfman were included), this release--the first wide release of Scream 2 since a 1998 CD featuring highlights from the first two films (recently released on vinyl by Varese), and a complement to Varese's expansion of Scream in 2011--brings his music to the forefront for the first time.
The Omen is limited to 3,000 copies, while Scream 2 taps out at 2,000. Both can be ordered now from the label; links and track lists are below!
