Intrada has added two scores from very popular composers to their Special Collection line: Basil Poledouris' soundtrack to 1980's romantic drama The Blue Lagoon, and Danny Elfman's ambitious score to Disney's 1990 adaptation of Dick Tracy.
Based on the 1908 novel of the same name, The Blue Lagoon starred Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins as two cousins shipwrecked on a South Pacific island, living (and loving) in a faraway paradise. The R-rated antics of the couple caused a stir, as Shields was only 14 at the time of filming (body doubles were used for nude scenes). Despite a critical drubbing, it was one of the top 10 grossing films of the year, and fans of film scores (and the late, great Poledouris, whose work on The Blue Lagoon was one of his breakthrough projects) treasure its romantic themes. Long out-of-print (belatedly released on CD by the Australian Southern Cross label in 1987), this new CD features 22 minutes of unreleased material, six of which are alternates--all remastered from the original three-track elements in Australia.
Moving on to the 1990s--and one of the decade's most unusual films--Disney's Dick Tracy was an ambitious, blockbuster affair. Based on the long-running comic strip, Warren Beatty stars (and directs) as the titular detective, with memorable turns from Al Pacino (who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as crime boss Big Boy Caprice), Dick Van Dyke (playing against type as a corrupt district attorney) and Madonna (who used the film as the jumping-off point for the Blonde Ambition Tour). The candy-colored color palette (mirroring the basic colors of the Sunday funnies) and ambitious marketing plan didn't necessarily translate to the kind of blockbuster Disney had hoped for in a post-Batman era, but the film picked up three Oscars for Best Make-Up, Best Art Direction and Best Original song (for Madonna's Stephen Sondheim-penned "Sooner or Later").
For the score, Beatty turned to Danny Elfman, the Oingo Boingo frontman whose foray into blockbuster film scores had hit high gear a year earlier with Tim Burton's Batman. His adventurous and thematic score dueled for prominence in a film with three soundtrack releases: a score album, a compilation of music inspired by the film and Madonna's I'm Breathless, which featured Sondheim's tunes plus the non-film smash "Vogue." That rich score finally gets its due here, as a two-disc set which includes the original soundtrack album plus a bonanza of unedited and alternate cues, all newly mixed from the original scoring sessions by original engineer Dennis Sands.
