Elaine Paige is lending her name to a new 3-CD collection of musical theatre favorites. Elaine Paige Presents The Musicals is due on November 25 from Union Square Music, with 58 tracks and over three hours of music.
Elaine Paige Presents the Musicals is licensed from various labels, making for a cross-section of recordings. You'll find familiar names from the worlds of theatre, movies and pop, including Michael Ball ("Love Changes Everything" from Aspects of Love, "Falling Slowly" from Once, "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Miserables, "Let It Be Me" as heard in Dreamboats and Petticoats), Petula Clark ("With One Look" from Sunset Boulevard, the immortal "Downtown" by way of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert), Michael Crawford ("Only You" from Starlight Express, "The Phantom of the Opera" and "The Music of the Night" from Crawford's 1986 star turn), Meryl Streep ("The Winner Takes It All" from Mamma Mia!), Jennifer Holliday (Dreamgirls' "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going"), Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth ("Defying Gravity" from Wicked), Liza Minnelli ("All that Jazz" from Chicago), and Sheridan Smith ("Don't Rain on My Parade" from the recent Funny Girl revival, "Serious" from Legally Blonde, and "Bugsy Malone" from Paul Williams' musical of the same name).
The collection features both original cast performances from Broadway and Hollywood, as well as cover versions, and concentrates mainly on modern-day theatre hits as well as classic shows that have enjoyed recent revivals in London's West End, such as Gypsy, Show Boat, Guys and Dolls, Half a Sixpence, and The Sound of Music. Naturally, there are a number of "second-hand showtunes" on this set from jukebox musicals, including the aforementioned "The Winner Takes It All" and "Let It Be Me," The Kinks' Sunny Afternoon from the musical of the same name, Jessie Mueller's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" from Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Alexandra Burke's "I Will Always Love You" from The Bodyguard, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons' original "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" from Jersey Boys.
Leading lady Paige is heard on five tracks throughout the set, including two hit singles: her U.K. top 10 rendition of "Memory" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats; "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar; the No. 1 smash duet with Barbara Dickson, "I Know Him So Well," from Rice, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson's Chess; "What I Did for Love" from A Chorus Line; and the showstopping "As If We Never Said Goodbye" from Lloyd Webber, Don Black and Christopher Hampton's Sunset Boulevard.
This set arrives just in time for holiday gift-giving for the musical theatre fan in your life on November 25 from Union Square Music. You can pre-order at the links below! (Note that the Amazon U.S. link is currently only for third-party sellers, while Amazon U.K. is selling directly.)
