Bob Marley and The Wailers' ninth album Exodus is receiving a new expanded edition this summer in honor of the album's 40th anniversary.
Exodus was the album that found Marley and his messages of love and social activism reaching a larger international audience. Exiled to London after an assassination attempt, he and his band concocted a laid-back album that ruminated on religion, sex and politics while still keeping the infectious reggae rhythms to the fore. Tracks like "Jamming," "Waiting In Vain," "Three Little Birds" and the exuberant "One Love/People Get Ready" (featuring an interpretation of Curtis Mayfield's classic protest song) remain staples of the reggae genre, with the latter often used to promote tourism in Marley's birthplace of Jamaica. The album became Marley's second U.S. Top 20 and first U.K. Top 10, going gold on both coasts, and was later named the greatest album of the century by TIME.
Exodus 40: The Movement Continues will be released as a multiformat CD or vinyl set, the centerpiece of which is a new "restatement" of the original reggae classic as overseen by Bob's son, Ziggy Marley. Ziggy has dived deep into the Exodus sessions and constructed new versions of the 10 songs on the album with unused and unheard vocals, overdubs and session takes. This resequenced version of the album will stand alongside a new remaster of the original on all packages.
Deluxe versions of the set will include a third disc of recordings taken from The Wailers' four-day stand at London's Rainbow Theatre from June 1-4, 1977, the week the album was released in stores. Of these eight recordings (one of which is exclusive to the 3CD package), only one was previously released on a 2001 expanded edition of the Exodus album. The deluxe vinyl version will include three extra discs: repressed replica 7" singles of "Waiting In Vain" b/w "Jamming" and "Smile Jamaica" (released in Jamaica in 1976), and a replica of the "Punky Reggae Party" 12" featuring a previously unreleased remix of "Keep On Moving."
Additionally, Bob Marley's official store will offer several exclusives, including T-shirt bundles, a gold vinyl edition of the original album, and a digital download featuring a "juggling" of the title track by Ziggy's younger brother Stephen, with guest appearances by Beenie Man, Queen Ifrica, Tarrus Riley and others.
The CD bundles are available June 2 (one day before the exact 40th anniversary of the album), while the vinyl edition will be released June 30.
