Two classic female comic heroes are getting some timely attention on CD, with soundtracks to the sexy sci-fi romp Barbarella and the heroic score to the hit '70s TV series Wonder Woman are bowing on CD this week.
One of DC Comics' best-known Justice League charter members (and easily the company's best-known princess of Themyscira!), Charles Moulton's Wonder Woman first appeared on the page in 1941, and after memorable television adaptations of Superman in the 1950s and Batman in the 1960s, the Amazonian heroine became TV's most famous superhero in the 1970s. Portrayed memorably by Lynda Carter, Wonder Woman (and her civilian alter ego Diana Prince) battled evildoers across from 1975 to 1979, across two networks (ABC for a TV movie pilot and subsequent season, and CBS for two more) and multiple generations (the second season updating from the 1940s to the present day, with co-star Lyle Waggoner playing both Prince's human ally Steve Trevor and his son, Steve Trevor, Jr.!). Carter's portrayal of Wonder Woman is arguably the most definitive, with only Gal Godot recently stepping into the character's outfit for last year's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and this summer's forthcoming standalone Wonder Woman film.
Similar to Neal Hefti's popular and defining musical theme to Adam West's Batman series, Wonder Woman was powered by a memorable, of-its-time theme written by the songwriting duo Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel. Fox had penned notable themes to ABC's The Wide World of Sports and Monday Night Football, and with Gimbel had also penned the chart-topper "Killing Me Softly With His Song" for Roberta Flack. Fox was one of several score composers for the series during its run, alongside Artie Kane, Johnny Harris, Angela Morley and others--all of whom are represented on La-La Land's thorough triple-disc collection, the first official release of any music from the series on CD! It's produced by Neil S. Bulk and mastered by James Nelson from original three-track elements in the Warner Bros. vaults; John Takis provides informative liner notes (with a foreword by Wonder Woman authority Andy Mangels), and Dan Goldwasser's package design fits the series' aesthetic brilliantly!
But that's not the only sci-fi legend whose musical representation appears on CD this week--nor the only one with a Charles Fox connection! Barbarella, the campy 1968 comedy starring Jane Fonda as the titular French comic heroine and Milo O'Shea as the villainous scientist Durand Durand (whose name, minus a few "d"s, would be used by one of England's biggest bands of the '80s), was one of the year's biggest smashes, a boon for its Italian producer Dino de Laurentiis, who was gaining international prominence as a movie mogul. The exotic score to the film was composed by Fox, with Bob Crewe (co-writer and co-producer of "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Walk Like a Man" and many other hits for The Four Seasons) masterminding the film's pop tunes, including vocals from New York-based group The Glitterhouse. Reissued on picture vinyl by Varese Sarabande for Record Store Day, this subsequent CD reissue is its first official appearance on the format.
The Wonder Woman set is available from La-La Land Records now (limited to 3,000 copies), while Barbarella is available from all retailers including Amazon, as linked below.

Albert Holguin says
Is the Wonder Woman soundtrack in mono or stereo? 🙂
Galley says
So, the numerous other releases of Barbarella on CD were unofficial?
Joe Marchese says
Unfortunately, yes. Harkit Records has notoriously released numerous titles (including a number by John Barry as well as BARBARELLA) without proper clearances. Varese's release has been fully licensed from the rights holders, and composer Charles Fox has shown his support, as well.
Galley says
Thanks for the info. Now I know which one to buy.
Anna Fuller says
Who actually sang the Wonder Woman theme song.
