Jaco Pastorius, Truth, Liberty and Soul: The Complete 1982 NPR Jazz Alive! Recording (Resonance) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
This new release captures the late jazz bassist leading a 22-piece big band at New York City's Avery Fisher Hall (now David Geffen Hall) on June 27, 1982. Pastorius welcomed Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Jon Faddis, Frank Wess, Lew Soloff, Howard Johnson and special guest Toots Thielemans to the stage for an evening of Pastorius' remarkable music. Though NPR broadcast the concert in 1982, that presentation wasn't complete. This set on 2 CDs has an additional 40 minutes of never-before-released music, and is fully authorized by NPR Music, the Pastorius estate, and his label, Warner Music Group. It's been mastered from the original 24-track tapes by the original recording engineer, Grammy winner Paul Blakemore, and includes a staggering 100-page squarebound book. This exhaustive book approaches this music in every context, and makes for essential reading as you listen!
