Reissued Commodores LP is Stacked, and That's a Fact

Four decades ago, Southern funk band the Commodores established their place in the pop-soul pantheon with their self-titled fifth album. Now, Universal Music Enterprises is revisiting the album in a brand new way, as an expanded vinyl set.

Commodores continued the Tuskegee, Alabama-bred group's ascendancy, balancing hip dance tracks with sweet balladry. The alpha and omega of these styles featured co-lead singer/drummer Walter Orange, trumpeter William King and bassist Ronald LaPread leading the group on the funky "Brick House," while Lionel Richie's tender, almost country-style "Easy" (with a delicate piano hook from keyboardist Milan Williams and a stellar fuzz guitar solo by Thomas McClary) held up the gentler side. Both were Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 5 and No. 4, respectively; the album itself became the group's first of four consecutive studio albums to hit the Top 10 of Billboard's pop charts and became the second of five No. 1 R&B charting albums.

What makes this edition of Commodores so exciting? Motown and UMe have gone back to the original production masters for this pressing of the LP, offering seven of the albums nine tracks in longer versions! They have been heard before on a 1998 CD pressing (thanks to friend of The Second Disc Volker for the clarification) are heard on vinyl for the first time.

The album, complete with a replica of the original autographed poster inserted into original copies of the LP, bows on black vinyl June 16. Universal's official web store is offering a limited blue vinyl variant, 500 copies strong. Full order links and track length specs (including comparisons to the original) are below!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Are these vinyl reissues just digital files dumped onto vinyl or are they pure analog reissues? If the former why not just get the cd? Vinyl is analog and when digitizing don't you lose the naturalness of the sound?

I would have to ask to confirm, but if I know UMe like I think (having interned there some years ago), they're keeping everything as analog as possible, because they like the way it sounds and are surely aware fans do too.

Who freaking cares if it's digital or analog!? I'm just excited this album is getting treatment of being blue, and having the longer versions (which I've already heard all of them). Already ordered mine, can't wait!

    Hi Mike,

you might wanna check that these longer versions are unreleased. I have the 1998 CD reissue and it has the longer versions. That fact was mentioned in the booklet.

Thanks for the heads-up. Extremely disingenuous of UMe not to put that in the press release.
