With apologies to Lady Gaga, it may be British band 10cc that's most worthy of the term "art pop." The multifaceted group yielded 11 Top 10 hits in their native England, including the No. 1s "Rubber Bullets," "I'm Not In Love" and "Dreadlock Holiday"; the group even crossed over into the U.S. charts with "I'm Not In Love" and "The Things We Do for Love," both Top 5 hits.
By an amazing coincidence, not one, not two, but three 10cc-related catalogue collections are hitting stores starting next month in the U.K.! Here's a breakdown of them all.
Before, During, After: The Story of 10cc is a new box set devoted to the history and legacy of Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. This 4CD collection includes a disc of the group's hits ("During"); from there, it's a disc of post-10cc material ("After") by Godley & Creme, Wax (Gouldman's duo with singer-songwriter Andrew Gold), solo tracks by Stewart, Gouldman and Godley; Creme's tenure in The Art of Noise in 1999 and even the rare single mix of "Pretty Little Head," a track Stewart penned for Paul McCartney's Press to Play in 1986. The remaining two "Before" discs cover much of the group's early session days at Strawberry Studios in their native Stockport (where Stewart was a business partner). This includes not only nine obscure singles and work for diverse clients like The Ohio Express and the Manchester City Football Club, but material by pre-10cc bands Doctor Father and Hotlegs, early solo Graham Gouldman material, Stewart's work with The Mindbenders (including the hit "A Groovy Kind of Love") and even session work for Neil Sedaka on tunes like "Solitaire" and "Love Will Keep Us Together."
Curated with input from all four band members (who contribute with new interviews in an accompanying 40-page hardcover book of liner notes), this box serves as the definitive introduction to the world of 10cc. For casual fans, a 2CD compilation, During, After: The Best of 10cc, will also be available. Look for them each on July 28.
On September 8, Caroline International will release a 5CD box set further detailing what Kevin Godley and Lol Creme did as a duo after leaving 10cc in 1976. The artier half of the band, the duo nonetheless scored two U.K. Top 10 hits in the 1980s with "Under Your Thumb" and "Wedding Bells." Body of Work 1978-1988 features, in full, each of the band's six albums in that decade (L (1978), Freeze Frame (1979), Ismism (1981), Birds of Prey (1983), The History Mix Vol. 1 (1985, presented in its expanded "Plus" form as issued by Edsel in 2004) and Goodbye Blue Sky (1988)), plus a disc of 12 non-LP B-sides.
Finally, Cherry Red's Lemon imprint is assembling a 2CD set devoted mostly to the solo work of 10cc frontman Eric Stewart. This 2CD Anthology includes six tracks from the latter half of 10cc's career with Stewart and Gouldman at the helm (mostly drawn from their final album, 1995's MirrorMirror) plus material from Stewart's four solo albums recorded between 1980 and 2009, including tracks from 1980's Girls and 1982's Frooty Rooties making their debuts on CD. The set is rounded out by new liner notes by writer Daryl Eslea, who interviewed Stewart for the essay. That set comes out a week before Before During After, on July 21

For years, even decades, I've wanted all 10cc's albums given the box set or individual cd reissue treatment. A Steven Wilson project if ever there was one - but no, problems with Johnathan Kings' involvement has apparently stymied a coherent plan. Then in 2012 out came Tenology. A compilation with too many wonderful album tracks missing in action - never mind the Single Edits that so irritate when all you want are the original, whole albums with, as I said, a sympathetic and improved S ound quality. Now, today, we read of more compilations but still no all-encompassing reissue of their albums. I don't get why not. Does anyone know any more? On a separate tack, I very much enjoyed the vast majority of Godley & Cremes' post-10cc output and will most likely buy their career - and whole album - box set, unless the sound is broadly deemed to be poor. Hope we get some more info on the remastering/remixing involved in all these planned releases. In case someone points out there were Japanese remasters of 10cc's albums in their entirety, I missed out on those (whenever they came out) and don't know if all or just the first four were issued in Japan? Anyway, I feel only more frustrated with another compilation and unable to get those first four albums in the way they deserve to be bought and enjoyed! Harrumph!

Unfortunately the 4 original members of 10cc have no say whatsoever in what is released on these 'compilations'. God knows who arranges them, but the mechanical copyrights are all with EMI, now Sony/ATV.
I have always wanted to go back and remix all the tracks again, from the original Analogue Tape multi-tracks, (as is happening with The Beatles 'Sgt Pepper' album), but nobody has allowed this to happen. There may be original 12" black vinyl versions out there if you can find them, but the plan to re-release them again on vinyl this year has been scrapped????
Good Luck, Eric.

The implication in the review above is that all Band members have been consulted, interviewed and somehow input to this latest compilation. With what you say about the rights now being with Sony/ATV, surely there's a path to be found to whomsoever considers a remix/reissuance full album project? All 10cc albums deserve this.

Why did they short change the Hits disc by not including the singles People in Love and For You and I? 12 tracks is ridiculous.

If someone could pass this comment to Eric....
It's very frustrating to hear what you've said about not having access to remixing a lot of the 10cc tracks for these reissue releases. And with this said, how did you come to remix the tracks from FROOTY ROOTIES and "Girls" (and the tracks from the other two solo albums) for your Anthology CD, which appears is what you were able to do?
Either way, I've read that you or someone said it was "too expensive" to license the whole FROOTY ROOTIES album for release, so you chose to release everything but 2 tracks from that album. How much more expensive could it be? I know that licensing fees and such for reissues, can vary, based on record company, publishing rights and other copyright situations, but so many fans have clamored for years to have FROOTY ROOTIES available someday in complete form on CD, with perhaps with a bonus track or two. Such a shame that this was a missed opportunity, because of fees.
I hope you will reconsider getting the whole album out on CD, as many would welcome it, and a good remix would make the album even more fantastic than the limitations of Vinyl. I've worn out three vinyl copies of the album over the years!!
