This summer has seen a wave of nostalgia for the modern rock boom of the early '00s. Lizzie Goodman's book Meet Me In the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City 2001-2011 has reminded music lovers of the heyday of bands like The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem and others. But New Yor, wasn't the only home of rock during this period; Rhino's throwing it back to the Jet age--the Australian rock group, that is.
The Melbourne-based quartet courted brief success during the early part of the last decade with tunes that sounded like if AC/DC had indeed been listening to The Strokes. Debut single "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" crossed into the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 thanks in part to its placement in one of the many striking iPod television commercials of that era. Follow-up ballad "Look What You've Done" also reached the upper reaches of the U.S. chart, while in their home country, debut album Get Born topped the Australian charts and went eight times platinum.
Though "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is," the lead single off 2006's Shine On, became Jet's fourth Top 10 alternative rock single in America, the landscape was shifting for modern rock bands. (A bizarre, scathing review from Pitchfork certainly didn't help.) Jet ended up calling it quits in 2012 after a third album three years prior, but reunited as a touring group earlier this year, opening for Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band when they came to Australia.
Now, Rhino (Elektra and Atlantic, respectively, were the U.S. distributors of debut Get Born and Shine On) have reissued both albums with a bonus disc of rare and unreleased material, including demos, outtakes and live material. Both sets are available to buy, and full track lists are below.
