Omnivore Aim to Please with Expansion of Bash & Pop's Debut

Tommy Stinson kicked off 2017 with a revival of his post-Replacements group Bash & Pop, featuring an all-new lineup and album. This fall, Omnivore will revisit Bash & Pop's first album, Friday Night is Killing Me, in a generously-expanded deluxe edition.

From the ashes of the 'Mats (and with a fitting name selected through a radio station contest), Bash & Pop was Stinson (switching from bass to guitar), Replacements drummer Steve Foley, his brother Kevin on bass and second guitarist Steve Brantseg. Produced by Don Smith of Cracker and Keith Richards fame and featuring Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Friday Night is Killing Me was their first and only album for Sire Records--a bit of a throwback to Stinson's old band's more raucous history. Indeed, Rolling Stone praised the album for "flash[ing] the easygoing, knockabout charm missing from The Replacements' last few albums." While Bash & Pop were short-lived, Stinson found a fascinating next act as one of the few consistent members of Guns N' Roses in the late '90s and 2000s.

Omnivore's version of Friday Night adds a bonus disc of 18 mostly unreleased and generally rare recordings. (Two B-sides make their CD debut, and "Making Me Sick" from the soundtrack to Kevin Smith's Clerks is included, alongside a trove of demos and alternate versions heard here for the first time.) Bob Mehr, author of the definitive Replacements tome Trouble Boys, provides liner notes.

Friday Night is Killing Me is available September 8. Pre-order now and check out the full track list!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.
