Queen's sixth album, 1977's News of the World, is being generously expanded for its 40th anniversary in a new 3CD/1DVD/1LP box set, to be released in November.
Following the typically grandiose rock of A Day At the Races a year before, Queen and longtime engineer Mike Stone, now promoted to co-producer, found themselves pursuing various rock styles and dialing back some of their more ornate impulses. This is arguably nowhere more prominent than in the landmark one-two opening salvo of arena rock staples "We Will Rock You" (propelled chiefly by one of the most famous drum intros of all time) and "We Are the Champions." (Both songs were featured on the lead single, which reached the Top 5 in both the U.K. and the U.S.) The album itself was a significant collaborative effort, with frontman Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor all contributing compositions to the project; Mercury, May and Taylor share lead vocal duties here, as well.
This new News of the World box set features two bonus discs and a DVD of bonus material. The first, the entirely unreleased Raw Sessions, presents an alternate version of the original album from demos, outtakes and live cuts. Highlights include a generously extended version of "We Are the Champions" (clocking in at a minute and a half longer than the album version), a version of "All Dead, All Dead" with Freddie on vocals, a demo of "Fight From the Inside" entirely sung and performed by Taylor and a live version of "Sleeping On the Sidewalk," a song rarely played during the band's News of the World tour in America. A second bonus disc collects a further 19 relevant bonus tracks, including versions from archival live albums, every bonus track from the bonus EP included in the 2011 reissue campaign, the band's final BBC session from 1977, five instrumentals and the U.S. edit of third single "It's Late," which makes its debut on CD here.
A new hourlong documentary, Queen: The American Dream, will chronicle the News of the World era with fascinating, unseen primary source footage shot by British documentarian Bob Harris at the beginning of the band's Stateside tour in the fall of 1977. This all-access look includes studio footage, live performances and concert rehearsals. The package is rounded out with "a pure analogue re-cut of the original vinyl LP, direct from the unmastered analogue master mix tapes" and packaged in a replica of the original album sleeve, plus a 60-page book of rare and unseen images.
The package is available on November 17. Full specs are below, with additional Amazon links to follow.

LP: Original album - new "pure analogue" cut
Keith says
Very disappointed what equates to 1CD of 'new material in an overpriced box mainly overpriced because of a useless slab of vinyl.
Vinyl fans loose out as they can't get the extras on their preferred format.
It's a no sale for me saving my money for a more value for money release £ for £ King Crimson XTC and Yes have offered more for less in the last few years.
The last offering from the twitching corpse that is Queen.
Shame because it's on of my favourite Queen Albums
Joe says
This too is my favorite Queen album. Its the first one I ever owned and when it came out in 1977, it was the first time I ever heard of Queen. So it has a special place in my music collection. With that, since I don't collect vinyl and a lot of this stuff was on the 2011 EP, BBC On Air, and a few live albums already released, I am staying away from this reissue.
Andrea says
A completely useless reissue.
I can't see who might be interested.
Personally, I might be interested in the "pure analogue" Lp, but I'm not buying it on Cd as well.
I'd like the unissued teacks, but I'm not buying the BBC tracks a second time. And I'm not interested in the DVD.
This is the ultimate in pointless reissues. If this bombs, big time, it might be a wake up call for the executives behind this sort of things.
George says
Queen has a ton of B-sides and single edits that could easily fill up a single disc which would be a better release as opposed commemorating News Of The World. The book and DVD look cool, but 80 percent of the tracks are already available. It's Late is my favorite Queen song and to have the single edit available is great but I am on the fence with this one. I still hold out for another classic live release along the lines of A NIght At The Odeon or Live At The Rainbow.
But my vote for the most useless reissue of the year is Motley Crue's 30th Anniversary of Girls, Girls Girls. It is nothing more than a re-release of the 1999 Remaster with bonus tracks and a DVD which offers nothing insightful. To add more insult to injury, the five bonus tracks are out of order to what is listed in the liner notes.
Mark says
If it were CD-only I'd certainly buy this, but with the addition of the LP I'm going to skip it. I'm not a fan of these oversized, mixed-media box sets. I just wish I could buy CD2 and CD3 as a separate unit since just about everyone who likes Queen already has CD1 in their collection.
