Viva Cavalera: Two Sepultura Albums Expanded By Rhino This Fall

Rhino is heading back to the '90s this fall with a pair of deluxe, expanded reissues from the Brazilian hard rock/metal band Sepultura.  Both 1993's Chaos A.D. and 1996's Roots will be available in remastered and expanded form on double CD and vinyl LP, with Chaos arriving on October 6 and Roots on November 3.

Sepultura was founded in 1983 by brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera with Wagner Lamounier and Jairo Guedes.  Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr. joined just a few short months later.  Four years later, in 1987, Jairo departed the line-up and was replaced by guitarist Andreas Kisser, finalizing the band's classic roster.  Fans consider Chaos A.D. to be a creative peak for the group, as Max Cavalera on vocals/guitar, Andreas Kisser on guitar, Paulo Xisto Pinto, Jr. on bass and Iggor Cavalera on drums expanded their hard rock sound into the realm of post-thrash "groove metal," emphasizing mid-tempo songs.  Rhino's expanded edition boasts a newly remastered version of the original album along with 17 bonus tracks. Among the highlights are a cover of Black Sabbath's "Symptom of the Universe" that was originally issued as a B-side, plus previously unreleased instrumental rehearsal tracks, and nine live performances.

Three years after Chaos A.D., Sepultura returned with Roots.  The album's themes drew on Brazilian politics and culture, and so it was appropriate that Brazilian rhythms (or roots!) were incorporated into the performances.  The expanded edition has the remastered original album plus another complement of 17 bonus tracks.  These include demos, instrumental versions, live recordings, and alternate takes. Roots turned out to be the final album fronted by Max Cavalera; Sepultura's next LP, 1998's Against, would introduce new frontman Derrick Green.

While both titles are being released as 2-CD and 2-LP sets, note that the vinyl iterations drop a few of the bonus tracks to accommodate the shorter running time on vinyl.  You'll find the full track listings below, as well as pre-order links!  Chaos A.D. is due on October 6, and Roots on November 3 from Rhino!
