Andy, Did You Hear About This One? R.E.M. Expands 'Automatic For The People' For 25th Anniversary

R.E.M. have announced details on their latest catalogue title: an expansion of 1992's landmark album Automatic For The People.

Following the Athens quartet's commercial floodgates bursting open with the chart-topping Out of Time (1991) and Top 10 singles "Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People," R.E.M. initially set out to make a more rock-oriented album but delivered something more intimate and emotionally intense. Part of the record was inspired by the band's advancing age (singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry were all in their early thirties) and adjustment to a world where many of their alternative contemporaries had split up. "The world that we'd been involved in had disappeared, the world of Hüsker Dü and The Replacements, all that had gone," Buck later said. "We were just in a different place and that worked its way out musically and lyrically."

Highlights on Automatic include the U.S. Top 30 rockers "Drive" and "Man On the Moon," the mournful ballad "Everybody Hurts" (a Top 10 U.K.. hit), and the elegiac, piano-driven "Nightswimming" (an all-time favorite of this author). The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200, placed third in the Village Voice Pazz & Jop Critic's Poll and was nominated for four Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

The deluxe Automatic is packed with four discs worth of material and a king's ransom of rare and unreleased content. The remastered album is paired with two bonus CDs: one including a new remaster of the band's Greenpeace benefit set at The 40 Watt Club in their native Athens (the only show they did in the Automatic era), and another of 20 unreleased demos, including the fully-realized outtake "Mike's Pop Song." A Blu-ray features a new Dolby Atmos mix of the album (and compilation-only track "Photograph," a duet with Natalie Merchant) done by original album producer and engineer Scott Litt and Clif Norrell, plus seven music videos and a vintage EPK. The deluxe package, enclosed in a 12" x 12" lidded box, also features a 60-page book of unseen photos by Anton Corbijn and Melodie McDaniel, plus new liner notes by Scottish music journalist Tom Doyle, drawing from new interviews from the band.

A 2CD cutdown featuring the album and live show will be available, along with a new 180-gram vinyl pressing. Look for all versions November 10 on Craft Recordings. Full specs and pre-order links are below!

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.
