Peaches En Regalia: Frank Zappa's "Halloween 77" Shows Collected On New Box Set

If you ever wanted to look in the mirror and see the famously mustachioed visage of Frank Zappa staring right back at you, has Zappa Records got a box set for you!  Halloween 77, due on Friday, October 20, celebrates the 40th anniversary of the musical iconoclast's run at New York's late, lamented Palladium from October 28-31, 1977.  The "costume box set" includes a mask and costume certain to spice up your trick-or-treating, in addition to a candy bar-shaped USB drive featuring six shows (158 songs, total) in 24-bit WAV format audio.  For the more traditionally inclined, the label is also issuing a 3-CD highlights version.

By the time 1977 rolled around, Zappa's Halloween shows had become an annual tradition.  Zappa first started playing Halloween in New York City in 1974, having previously performed on the holiday in Passaic, New Jersey and Chicago.    The Halloween '77 stint at the 3,000-seat Palladium on East 14th Street (today, alas, the site of a New York University residence hall) was one of the artist's famous runs at the venue; his December 1976 shows there formed the basis of Zappa in New York, and his October '78 gigs were preserved on Halloween.  All of the 1977 performances were recorded (with four being filmed), resulting in the Baby Snakes film project.

Over the course of these shows, Zappa revisited songs from Hot Rats, Over-Nite Sensation, Bongo Fury, One Size Fits All, and his most recent album at the time, Zoot Allures, while also previewing tracks that would appear on the upcoming Sheik Yerbouti (released in 1979).  Notably, Zappa premiered his satirical spin on disco, "Dancin' Fool" as well as the controversial "Jewish Princess" on October 30.  (The basic tracks for the latter were used to create the eventual studio version.)

All six shows on the Halloween 77 USB have been mixed in 2016 from the original multi-track masters. Each concert is presented "as is" with no subsequent overdubs.  The box set will also include a 28-page digital booklet with photos, liner notes from "Vaultmeister" and compilation co-producer Joe Travers, and reminiscences from musicians Adrian Belew and Ed Mann, keyboard tech Thomas Nordegg, tour manager Phil Kaufman, and fan Janet "The Planet" Walley.  The 3-CD version will feature the complete Halloween night show plus highlights from the October 30 gig.  Halloween 77 will also be available digitally, allowing for fans to purchase any of the concerts individually.

Also on October 20, Zappa and UMe will reissue the 1976 album Zoot Allures on 180-gram vinyl, as newly remastered and cut from the original analogue tapes by Bernie Grundman.  Look for both iterations of Halloween 77, as well as the vinyl Zoot Allures, on October 20 at the links below!
